TOPIC 9 – TRANSPORT IN ANIMALS

Blood and Lymph Vessels

OBJECTIVES:
Core Supplementary

Describe the structure and functions of arteries, veins and Explain how the structures of arteries, veins and capillaries
capillaries   are adapted for their functions

State the function of arterioles, venules and shunt vessels

Name the main blood vessels to and from the:
• heart, limited to vena cava, aorta, pulmonary artery
and pulmonary vein
• lungs, limited to the pulmonary artery and pulmonary Outline the lymphatic system in terms of lymphatic vessels

TABLE (EXT)
Blood vessel Structure Explanation

Artery thick, tough wall with muscles, elastic Carries blood at high pressure – prevents bursting and maintains pressure wave. The large arteries,
fibres and fibrous tissue near the heart, have a greater proportion of elastic tissue, which allows these vessels to stand up to
the surges of high pressure caused by the heartbeat.

lumen quite narrow, but increases as a

pulse of blood passes through

valves absent

Vein thin wall – mainly fibrous tissue, with little

muscle or elastic fires

lumen large

valves present

Capillary permeable wall, one cell thick, with no

muscle or elastic tissue

lumen approximately one red blood cell

wide

valves absent
