Learning objective 2
Path to sainthood
Step 1:
The potential saint must be dead, generally, at least five
years because the Catholic Church believes that saints must
be Heaven with God. Local interest is generated in regards to
person’s virtuous life and presented to the local Bishop
Path to sainthood
Step 2 and 3:
The local Bishop with help, investigates the person’s life and
holiness. During this stage, the person is referred to as a
“Servant of God.”

If the investigation is approved,

the person is called “Venerable.”
Path to sainthood
Step 4:
The Congregation for the Causes of Saints looks for evidence
that a miracle has occurred through the intercession of the
potential saint after their death and thus, highlights their
special relationship with God. If the miracle is accepted, it
enables the person to be called ‘‘Blessed’’. The ceremony for
this is known as beatification.
Path to sainthood

Step 5:
For canonisation another miracle is needed, attributed to the
intercession of the Blessed and having occurred after their
beatification. If proved, the candidate will be accepted as a
‘‘Saint’’ in a canonisation ceremony, performed by the Pope.
Canonisation is a declaration that someone can be honoured
by the universal Church as ‘an example of holiness that we can
follow with confidence’.
