Unit-9 Material Changes

Teacher Moses/IIP
Chemical reaction

• A process by which one or more substances (reactants)

are rearranged to form different substances (products)
with different physical and chemical properties.
Evidence of chemical reaction
Color change
Odor change
Energy change
Formation of precipitate
Release of gas
How to describe chemical reactions?

• With word equations,

hydrogen + oxygen water

With symbolic equations,

Fe + S FeS
Magnesium + Chlorine Magnesium chloride

• Reactants : the substances that react together/left side

of the equation

• Products : the new substances that are made in the

reaction/right side of the equation
Examples of chemical reaction
Chemical reactions in organisms

• Digestion of foods
proteins amino acids
Triglycerides cholestrol

• Respiration
Glucose + oxygen carbon dioxide + water
Name one reaction that happens only in
plant, not in animals.

• Photosynthesis

Carbon dioxide + water Light Glucose + oxygen

Identify reactants and products?

End of lecture practice

1) In physical changes, physical appearances are still the same.

2) In order to occur chemical changes, chemical reactions are
needed.
3) Chemical change can occur in mixtures.
4) Reactants are the substances that are formed from chemical
reactions.
5) Most of the chemical changes are reversible.
