ABSTRACT
 Automation at the substation is done by the use of
programmable logic controller (PLC) and supervisory control
and data acquisition (SCADA) instead of electromechanical
devices.
 As the technology advances the human involvement become
less and degree of automation will correspondingly get greater.
 A SCADA control center performs centralized monitoring and
control for field sites over long-distance communications
network. Based on information received from remote stations.
 On basis of controls from the computer the breakers are managed
and in computer the SCADA system is installed which is used for
monitoring and control.
 If there any problem occurs in plant, we can easily identify which
part is trip. After that we can troubleshoot the problem through
manpower and monitor the substation. 2

WORKING PRINCIPLE
 The basic idea behind substation automation is to monitor the
switchyards in substation. In substation, many relays and circuit breakers
are used.
 When any one of the breakers are tripped, serious issues may happened
and hence, it required monitoring and controlling through sophisticated
system like SCADA.
 In this project, signals are given to the computer of the substation
where there is an electronic control unit which controls the sequence
of disconnecting the load.
 On the basis of controls from computer the breakers are managed
through SCADA system. If there any problem occurs in plant, we can
4
easily identify which part is tripped.
 After that we can troubleshoot the problem through manpower and
monitor the substation. Objective of this project is to transform manual
control system to automated switch control system.
 This paper analyses the performances of incoming feeders and
outgoing feeders of substation for real time data monitoring by using
SCADA wonderware intouch software.
 Also automate all the process taking place in the substation. The simulation
based approach automated systems are demonstrated in this research.

COMPONENTS USED
 Voltage sensor
 Current sensor
 Transformer
 Relay Module
 PLC
 SCADA

6
PLC
: The main function of a PLC is to control a process using
feedback devices and actuators.
 The PLC working principle is simple. It scans the state/status of
inputs (which are connected to sensors, push buttons, safety
devices etc.) Then, the logics/program stored inside its memory is
processed.

7
SCADA
: SCADA stands for supervisory control and data acquisition.
 It is a type of software application program for process control.
 SCADA is a central control system which consist of controllers
network interfaces, input/output, communication equipments
and software.

8
APPLICATIION:

 Continuous monitoring of Speed and Frequency.

 Geographical monitoring of coal delivery and water treatment
processes.
 Supervising the status of circuit breakers, protective relays and
other safety related operations.
 Generation operations planning.
 Active and reactive power control.
