What is a pressure transducer?
 A pressure transducer converts an applied fluid pressure into an electrical
output signal.

 The output electrical signal can be analog or digital.

 They are also referred to as pressure sensors or pressure transmitter.

 Although there are various types of pressure transducer ,one of the most
common is the strain-gage base transducer.

 They are frequently used since pressure measurement at high pressure

requires a special design of sensor for high performance and safety.
Principle of Pressure Transducer

 Pressure conversion into an electrical signal is accomplished by the physical

deformation of strain gauges, which are bonded into the pressure transducer’s
diaphragm and wired into a Wheatstone bridge arrangement.

 The pressure employed to the pressure transducer delivers a diaphragm

deflection, which proposes strain to the gages. The strain will generate an
electrical resistance change proportional to the pressure.
Construction of Pressure Transducer

 A pressure transducer consists of two main parts: an elastic material which will deform
when exposed to a pressurized medium and an electrical device which detects the
deformation and converts it into a usable electrical signal.

 The elastic material can be formed into many different shapes and sizes depending on
the sensing principle and range of pressures to be measured.

 This often involves a diaphragm combined with an electrical device that uses a resistive,
capacitive, or inductive principle of operation
Working of Pressure Transducer

 A metal foil strain gage is a transducer whose electrical resistance

varies with applied pressure.
 In other words, it converts force, pressure, tension, compression, torque,
and weight (aka weight sensors) into a change in electrical resistance,
which can then be measured.
 Strain gauges are electrical conductors tightly attached to a film in a
zigzag shape.
 When this film is pulled, it — and the conductors — stretches and
elongates. When it is pushed, it is contracted and gets shorter.
 This change in shape causes the resistance in the electrical conductors to
also change.
 The strain applied in the pressure transducer can be determined based on
this principle, as strain gauge resistance increases with applied strain and
diminishes with contraction.
Types of Pressure Transducer

 Resistive pressure transducer

 Capacitive pressure transducer
 Inductive pressure transducer
Resistive Pressure Transducers

 Resistive type pressure transducers use resistive strain

gauges. In resistive pressure transducers, resistance of the
transducer varies with the applied strain or pressure.

 That is, the resistance of the transducer is a measure of

pressure on it. Hence it can be used as a pressure
transducer.
Capacitive Pressure Transducers

 In capacitive pressure transducers, the capacitance of the

transducer varies with the applied pressure.

 That is, the capacitance of the transducer is a measure of

pressure on it. Hence it can be used as a pressure
transducer.
Inductive Pressure Transducers

 In inductive pressure transducers, the inductance of the

transducer varies with the applied pressure.

 That is, the inductance of the transducer is a measure of

pressure on it. Hence it can be used as a pressure
transducer.
Selection criteria

pressure .
 Used in electronically changeable pressure switch.
 Measuring pressure drops in a line for preventive maintenance.
 Measuring fluid height or level in tanks.
 Measuring inlet, outlet or system pressure in engine test setup..
