LIFECOLLEGE: MOLDING CHAMPIONS

Lesson Objectives
At the end of the lesson, you are expected to:
• represent real-life situations using exponential
functions.
• distinguish between exponential function, exponential
equation, and exponential inequality
• Analyze the graphs of exponential functions

Focus Questions:
1. What is an exponential function?
2. How is exponential function applied in daily
life?

An EXPONENTIAL FUNCTION can be
written as
Where b>0, b1, and x is any real number

In the equation f(x) = bx, b is a constant

called the base and x is an independent
variable called exponent.

PROPERTIES OF EXPONENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND THEIR

GRAPHS.
1. The domain is the set f real numbers (-).
2. The range is the set of positive real numbers (0, ).
3. If b>1, f is an increasing exponential function. If 0<b<1, f is a
decreasing exponential function.
4. The function passes through the point (0,1) because f(0)=b0=
1.
5. The graph approaches but does not reach the x-axis. The x-axis
is the horizontal asymptote.

(GRAPHICAL ANALYSIS)
Analyze the graph of the exponential function f(x)=2 x and other
exponential functions related to it. Observe the changes that
happen among the graphs and describe the trends.

TRANSFORMATIONS INVOLVING EXPONENTIAL FUNCTIONS

EQUATION TRANSFORMATION DESCRIPTION

f(x) = b x+c Horizontal

translation
Shifts the graph of f(x)=bx c units to the left of c>0
Shifts the graph of f(x)=bx c units to the right of c<0

Vertical Stretches the graph of f(x)=bx vertically if c>0

f(x) = cb x
stretching or Shrinks the graph of f(x)=bx vertically if c<0
shrinking

f(x) = -b x Reflection Reflects the graph of f(x)=bx about the x-axis

Reflection Reflects the graph of f(x)=bx about the y-axis

f(x) = b -x

Vertical Shifts the graph of f(x)=bx c units upward if c>0

f(x) = b + c x
translation Shifts the graph of f(x)=bx c units downward if c>0

Without graphing, describe the graphs of the indicated functions

from the given function:
Given: f(x)= 3x Transformation
f(x)= 3 x+1

f(x)= 3x – 2
f(x)= 3x+1 –2 Shifts the graph 1 unit to the left and 2 units downward
f(x)= 2•3x
f(x)= -3x
