Order of operation (Chapter 1.3)
BEDMAS

1. Brackets { [ ( ) ] }

2. Exponentiation / Power: x2 x1/2= √x (root)

3. Division ÷ : or /

Multiplication * (also · and x)

4. Addition +

Subtraction
Rule: -
3 and 4 seperately = from left to right, whatever comes first.
3 and 4 together = always calculate 3 first, then 4.
Algebraic expressions (Chapter 1.4)

term term

5x−3
coefficient constant
variable

2x + 4y – 25x +30y – 45xy + 25yx

Collecting like terms
5ab + 7a + 3b - 2ab + 3a =
5ab - 2ab + 7a + 3a +3b =
3ab + 10a + 3b
10ab - 7a + 3b + 2ba + 3a - 3b =
10ab + 2ab - 7a + 3a + 3b - 3b = 12ab – 4a

5a2 - b + 7a2 + 3b - 2a + 3b =
5a2 + 7a2 – b + 3b + 3b - 2a =
12a2 + 5b – 2a
Simplify (chapter 1.4)
1. 12 : 3 × 2 = 4×2=8
(Careful: this is not 12 : 6 = 2 !!)

2. 12 × 3 : 2 = 36 : 2 = 18
3. 12 × 3 + 2 = 36 + 2 = 38
4. 12 × (3 + 2) = 12 x 5 = 60
5. 15 – 4 × 2 = 15 – 8 = 7
6. 12 × 5 – 5 × 3 + 2 = 60 –15 + 2 = 47
7. 2a + 7b – a – 9 = a + 7b – 9
8. 4xy +2×3y – 6yx = 4xy + 6y – 6xy = -2xy + 6y
9. If x=4, work out: 3x2= 3 × 4 × 4 = 48

Rule: collect like terms and keep unlike terms

separately.
Brackets (chapter 1.5)
1. 2a + (5b + 4a) = 2a + 5b + 4a = 6a +5b

2. 3 × 2ab – (2a + 5b) = 6ab – 2a – 5b

3. 7 – (3a + 7b - a) – (a – 2b) = 7 – (2a + 7b) – a + 2b
= 7 – 2a -7b –a + 2b
= 7– 3a – 5b
Simplify and brackets
1. 5x + 10x : 2 = 5x + 5x = 10x
2. a(5 + b) = 5a + ab
3. -2(-b + a) = 2b – 2a
4. 3 – 4(a + bx : b) = 3 – 4(a + x) =3 – 4a – 4x
5. 3(a + b) – 2(a – b) = 3a + 3b – 2a + 2b = a + 5b
6. -(a + 2b) –3b = – a –2b –3b = – a –5b
7. -1(4a – 3p : 3) = -1(4a – p) = -4a + p
8. a + b(-p + 4) = a – bp + 4b
9. 2p – p(-4+a) = 2p + 4p – ap = 6p – ap
From the intro exam
• Simplify:
• (2x+y) – (x-2y)
• 3m - 7 – (2m-8)
• -c + a + 2b + ab + 3b - 2a + c +ab
• 3(2a + 5a) -2(2a - b)
• 4k2 + 5k – 3 + 5k2 + 2
• Find the value of x2 -3y, when x = -4 and y
= -2
