Domestic Tourism Expenditure
Domestic tourism refers to tourism of
resident visitors within the economic
territory of the country of reference. In
2020, the domestic tourism expenditure
posted a decline of -82.3%, amounting to
PhP. 556.89 billion compared with 2019’s
PhP. 3.14 Trillion earnings.
SEPTEMBER 2020 UNWTO
• Domestic tourism is six times larger than
international tourism.
• An estimated 9 billion domestic tourist trips (overnight
visitors) were recorded around the world in 2018, of
which well over 50% is in Asia and the Pacific.
• Worldwide, domestic tourism is over six times bigger
than international tourism (1.4 billion international
arrivals in 2018) measured in number of tourist trips.
• With travelers considering destinations closer to home in
the early stages of travel normalization and with still
important travel restrictions in place for international
travel as a consequence of COVID-19, countries with
higher shares of domestic tourism are likely to
recover earlier and faster.
DOMESTIC TRAVEL will lead the RECOVERY of the Philippines’ tourism industry
with Filipino travelers expecting to go to destinations closer to home and
spending less in the midst of health concerns caused by Covid-19 pandemic.
Domestic leisure travel will lead the recovery of Philippine tourism.
Majority of travelers expect a reduction of their income and travel budget.
Health and safety remains the primary concern of travelers.
Travelers prefer reduced-contact activities once leisure travel restrictions are lifted.
Travelers prefer online and digital channels for convenience and reduced contact.
Travelers plan to travel close to home.
The survey also found that domestic travel will
lead the recovery of the Philippine travel industry,
with 77 percent of respondents expressing their
