 CHARACTERISTICS OF THE
DINKAS
PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Population: 4700,000 people.

The Dinkas one of the most
geographically extensive villages in
South Sudan.
Language: Dinka Tall, wear little clothes
Reddish hair (cattle urine)

The dinkas do not depend only on

agriculture or livestock but on the
combination of the two. Most words
describe colors and are generally
inspired by their animals.
Dinkas sympathize with those who
have few or no head of cattle.
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE
DINKAS
MYTHOLOGY They believe in
a supreme being, called Nhialic,
and in other minor deities, yath
and jak. Approximately 94% of
the population maintains the
traditional religion; 5% have
adopted Christianity and 1%
Islam.

LIVING PLACE The town

consists of 2 or 3 circular huts,
with a conical straw roof and
walls of interwoven branches and
covered with mud. When a man
has more than one wife, each of
them has his hut.
 CHARACTERISTICS OF THE NUER

Of the 10 million inhabitants of South

Sudan. 4 million are dinkas. 2 million
are nuer. 4 million are the remaining
ethnicities.

The Nuer believe that all life comes from Kowth

and returns to the same divinity at death.

The Nuer speak a dialect related to the Atuot

ethnic language.

The Nuer separated long ago from the Dinkas

and dominate large areas of the Upper Nile
from the Zeraf River to the Baro and Pibor
rivers in Ethiopia, where they have caused the
Anuak to move.
 CHARACTERISTICS OF THE NUER
They raise cattle, hunt,
fish and grow
sorghum, corn and
tobacco.

The presence of oil in

their lands and the wars
of cattle generated the
third civil war of South
Sudan with the Dinkas.

In 2015, 50,000 dead, 1.5 million displaced and half a million in refugee camps. In
2017 there were already 2 million refugees, 1.7 million on the brink of famine,
malnourished children and mass rapes.
In 2018, peace is signed with a total of almost 400,000 dead. The war forced to
close oil wells, which represent 90% of the country's income .
