Nursing Organization
 Canadian Nursing Association defines “nursing
organization” as a not-for-profit group of health
professionals with a formal governance structure. 
 The organization serves and is accountable to its
specialist nurse members and others by providing
continuing professional development (CPD), health
care, and/or research.
 Nursing organizations promote and encourage the
use of evidence-based practice to its members.

International Council of Nurses

The International Council of Nurses (ICN) is a


federation of national nurses associations in
more than 130 countries. Operated by nurses and
leading nursing internationally, ICN works to
ensure quality nursing care for all and sound health
policies globally. Founded in 1899, ICN is the
world’s first and widest reaching international
organization for health professionals and is
headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.

 Main activities
 ICN has identified three key program areas as crucial to the
betterment of nursing and health.
 These are known as ICN's Pillars and they are: Professional
Practice, Regulation, and Socio-economic welfare.
 The association's activities are focused in these areas. The
International Classification for Nursing Practice (ICNP®) – a
common code language for data globally and Leadership for
Change ™ are two significant ICN projects which come under
the professional practice pillar. Leadership in Negotiation is a
project which comes under the socio-economic welfare pillar.

 ICN's ever-increasing networks and connections to people
reinforce the importance of strong linkages with national,
regional and international nursing and non-nursing
organizations.
 Building positive relationships internationally helps
position ICN, nurses and nursing for now and the future.

 It is known for its guidelines, best practices, publications,
benchmarking tools, conferences, online education and
reference guides.

 ICN's International Centre for Human
Resources in Nursing is dedicated to
strengthening the nursing workforce globally
through the development, ongoing monitoring and
dissemination of comprehensive information,
standards and tools on nursing human resources
policy, management, research and practice.
World Health Organization
 The World Health Organization (WHO) is the UN
agency charged with spearheading international
public health efforts. In its seventy-year life, the
WHO has logged both successes, such as
eradicating smallpox, and perceived failures, such
as its delayed response to the Ebola outbreak in
2014.

 In response, the WHO has undertaken reforms to
improve its ability to fight future epidemics and
boost the health of the hundreds of millions of
people still living in extreme poverty.
 However, a rigid bureaucracy and an increasingly
troublesome budget could impede reforms.
 Meanwhile, the 2020 coronavirus pandemic has
emerged as a great challenge for the health agency,
sparking fresh debate over its effectiveness.

 WHO monitors and coordinates activities concerning many
health-related issues, including genetically modified foods,
climate change, tobacco and drug use, and road safety.
 The WHO is also an arbiter(setting authority) of norms and
best practices. Since 1977, the organization has maintained a
list of essential medicines it encourages hospitals to stock; it
has since made a similar list of diagnostic tests.
 The agency also provides guidance on priority medical
devices, such as ventilators and X-ray and ultrasound
machines.
Functions of Pakistan Nursing Association

 Nursing Associations are critical for generating the


energy, flow of ideas, and proactive work needed to
maintain a healthy profession that advocates for the
needs of its clients and nurses, and the trust of society.
 These roles include developing and disseminating
foundation documents, lobbying for legislation and
regulations that protect and serve users
of nursing services, and advocating for patients and
issues which affect a nurse's ability to deliver safe
care.
Functions of Pakistan Nursing Federation

 The PNF was registered on July 6, 1972, by the


Assistant Registrar, Joint Stock Companies,
Lahore, under Societies Act 1860, as a successor to
the Trained Nurses Association of Pakistan which
was founded and duly registered in 1949.

Functions of Pakistan Nursing Council

 The PNC is an autonomous, regulatory body


constituted under the Pakistan Nursing Council Act
(1952, 1973) and empowered to register (license)
Nurses, Midwives, Lady Health Visitors (LHVs)
and Nursing Auxiliaries to practice in Pakistan.
PNC was established in 1948.

 PNC sets the curriculum for the education


of Nurses, Midwives, LHVs
and Nursing Auxiliaries.
 PNC inspect educational institutions for approval
based on established standards.
 PNC provides registration (license) to practice.
 PNC maintains standards of education and practice.

 PNC works closely with the four Provincial
Nursing Examination Boards (NEBs).
 PNC plays an advisory role for the overall benefits
of Nurses, Midwives and LHVs in the country.
 PNC maintains an advisory role for the Federal and
Provincial Governments regarding nursing
education and nursing services.

 PNC communicates policy decision regarding
nursing education and the welfare of nurses, taken
in council meeting, to governments Nursing
institutions NEBs and Armed Forces Nursing
services for implementation.
 PNC prescribe penalties for fraudulent registration
by intention of pretense, and removes person from
the register for professional misconduct.
