1) What kind of GHG’s are mostly emitted from
agricultural sector ?
CARBONDIOXIDE (CO2)
METHANE (CH4)
2
2) What are the causes for GHG’S emission ?
3
3) What share of
global greenhouse
gas emissions
comes from
agriculture ?
• Farms emitted 6 billion
tonnes of GHGs in 2015, or
about 13 percent of total
global emissions.
• That makes the agricultural
sector the world’s second-
largest emitter, after the
energy sector (which includes
emissions from power
generation and transport).
4
Farming emissions come from variety of sources that differ
depending on the type of farm.
5
4) Where do a farm’s emissions come from?
China
Brazil
United States
India
Indonesia
Russian Federation
Argentina
Myanmar and
Pakistan.
8
7) What are the biggest opportunities to
reduce agricultural emissions?
• Changes in both farming practices and food demand offer big opportunities.
• Also, recent WRI research shows that about 24 percent of all calories currently produced for
human consumption are lost or wasted in the food supply chain.
• Consequently, reducing food losses and wastes can also play an important role. 9
8) How do rice paddies contribute to global
warming ?
• Methane in rice paddies is produced by microscopic organisms that
respire CO2, like humans respire oxygen.
• More CO2 in the atmosphere makes rice plants grow faster, and the
extra plant growth supplies soil microorganisms with extra energy,
pumping up their metabolism.
• Increasing CO2 levels will also boost rice yields, but to a smaller
extent then CH4 emissions.
• As a result, the amount of CH4 emitted per kilogram of rice yield will
increase.
• Rising temperatures decrease the rice yield, so they also increase the
amount of CH4 emitted per kilogram of rice. 10
9) How paddy produces Methane ?
11
10) Do most of the
commercial farms
measure and
manage their GHG
emissions ?
• However, most farms fail to
measure their emissions –
making it difficult for them
to determine how to reduce
their impact.
