Definition of Procedure Text

There are three definition about procedure text :


(1)Texts that explain how something works or how to use instruction /
operation manuals e.g. how to use the video, the computer, the tape
recorder, the photocopier, the fax.
(2) Texts that instruct how to do a particular activity e.g. recipes, rules
for games, science experiments, road safety rules.
(3) Texts that deal with human behavior, e.g how to live happily, how to
succeed
Purpose of Procedure Text

PROCEDURE TEXT IS USED TO TELL PEOPLE HOW


TO MAKE/ TO EXPLAIN STEPS/INSTRUCTION TO
MAKE/OPERATE / DO SOMETHING.
Generic Structure of Procedure Text
1. Goal/aim/purpose ( or title)
This text contains about purpose of making or operating of something.

2. Material or Ingredient (not required for all procedural texts)


Materials or ingredients that are used in making something. But not
all parts of procedure text includes materials or ingredients

3. Steps / instructions/methods (the actions that must be taken)


Contains the steps or sequences that must be done so that the objectives
outlined in the aim/goal to be achieved. Steps or sequences must be a
sequence from the first to the last.
How to Make a Cheese Omelet Goal/Aim/Purpose

Ingredients Material or
1 egg, 50 g cheese, ¼ cup milk, 3 tablespoons cooking, oil, a pinch of salt and Ingredient
pepper.

Frying pan, fork, spatula, cheese grater, bowl, plate.

Goal/Aim/Purpose
Material or Ingredient
Making Pisang Goreng is very easy. First you need some ripe bananas and Steps / instructions/
frying oil. Then slice the banana into thin slices. If you like, you can sprinkle methods

three minutes. Do this twice for a good rinsing. Finally, put the wet clothes
into the spin compartment, set the knob and wait until the spin processing
shuts off. Now, you are ready to put the clothes on the line.
Language Feature of Procedure Text:
1. Use command / imperative sentence (e.g : put the noodles on the .
. ., cut the onion. . ., wash the tomatoes. . . )
2. Using action verbs, e.g : make, take, boil, cook
3. Use adverbial of sequence / Using temporal conjunction (e.g: first,
second, third, the last)
4. Using adverbials (Adverbs) to express detail the time, place,
for example, for five minutes, 2 hours, etc.
5. Using Simple Present Tense
Imperative sentence (Kalimat Perintah)

The sentence which is used to convey a command, a request, or a forbiddance is called an imperative
sentence. This type of sentence always takes the second person (you) for the subject but most of the
time the subject remains hidden.

The word order of a sentence in the imperative is:  


verb + object (if needed).

The negative imperative is made with 


do + not or don’t + verb + object (if needed).

We use the sequence adverbs "first", "next", "then" and "finally" to describe the order

• Ingredients:
16 ounces cream cheese, 2 packages, softened
½ cup sugar
½ teaspoon vanilla
2 large eggs
4 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 prepared Graham cracker crust
• Directions:
Beat cream cheese, sugar and vanilla at medium speed until well-blended. Blend in 2 eggs. Stir in chocolate chips then
pour batter into Graham cracker chust. (you may sprinkle ¼ cup mini semi sweet chocolate chips on top if you desire).
Bake at 35calcius for 40 minutes, or until certer is almost set. Cool.
For best results refrigerate for 3 hours.

Reading test example 2
Recipe for French Toast
You are going to need:
4 pieces of bread
1 spoon of sugar
2 eggs
A quarter of a cup of milk
Butter

Before you start to cook, you have to read the recipe.
Now you can get ready. After you read the recipe, put everything on the counter.
When everything is ready, break the eggs, pour a quarter of the milk in the bowl, then add a small spoon of sugar. Mix
the eggs, milk and sugar.
Next, put a piece of bread in the bowl with the eggs, milk and sugar. Turn over the bread.
Now, put some butter in the pan. Turn on the stove. When the pan is hot, take the bread out of the bowl and put it
into the pan. After you cook one side of the bread, cook the other side. After you finish the first place of the bread,
cook the other pieces. Now you have French toast!
