INTRODUCTION

Seismic vulnerability evaluation is defined as an

approved process or methodology of evaluating
deficiencies in a building that prevents the building
from achieving a selected performance objective.
seismic vulnerability estimation is pre-requisite for
disaster mitigation management.
no reliable information/database available for
existing building stock, construction practices, in-situ
strength of material and components of the building3
Aim is to assess the seismic capacity of earth quake
vulnerable buildings or earthquake damaged
buildings for the future use.
SEISMIC VULNERABILITY
Seismic hazard depends upon geology of the area under
consideration and is, therefore, site specific.

Seismic vulnerability depends upon:

• The material of which the structure is made.

• The mechanical properties of construction materials.

• The geometry and layout of a building and its structural components.

• The detailing of structural components as well as floor-wall

connection details.

Depending on the seismic evaluation, a building can be demolished, retrofitted to increase its capacity, or
modified to decrease its seismic demand
Methodologies OF
EVALUATION -
CLASSIFICATION

The methodologies available so far for the evaluation of existing buildings can be broadly divided into
two categories – qualitative methods – analytical methods

quantitative evaluation depends on the judgment of experienced well trained engineers with the aid of
some empirical guides. ; Analytical evaluation is performed through one or more of the different
approaches used for seismic design or analysis of structures.
Seismic evaluations of the buildings
systematically performed in three levels

1. Rapid Visual Screening,

2. Simplified Vulnerability Assessment and

3. Detailed Vulnerability Assessment

CLASSIFICATION OF DAMAGE TO BUILDINGS:

Grade1: Negligible to slight damage (No structural damage ,slight non-structural damage)
Grade2: Moderatedamage (Slight structural damage ,moderate nonstructural damage)
Grade3: Substantial to heavy damage (moder atestructuraldamage, heavynonstructuraldamage)
Grade4: Very heavy damage (heavystructuraldam age,veryheavynon-structuraldamage)
Grade5: Destruction (very heavy structural damage)
SEISMICITY IN INDIA
However small is the destruction and collapse of buildings in percentage, loss of lives and injuries are caused due to
poor earthquake resistance of buildings. For the safety and mitigation of disastrous effects of earthquake hazard,
performing seismic vulnerability assessment of all buildings in high seismic zone regions at least by RVS method is highly
recommended.
