popular map –AWARD at Lázár deák map Contest
• Moon: Budapest, 2004. Also popular. AWARD at
Lázár deák map Contest; updated in 2004 for
World Atlas edition
• Venus: Budapest 2001, Zagreb 2003., Krakow,
updated 2004 for Venus Transit. Less popular until
now
• Mercury: special “half-albedo-half-topo map” work
in progress. Simplified for World Atlas.

New map features
• Resulting from a Survey among students
– New colors, not to misunderstood blue as water +
polar caps added as whitish color
– Informal names added („Face on Mars”) with
explanation
– Short explanatory texts, detailed legend, images
– More height data if avalaible w/ planetary
records
– Linear features added as vectorial lines
(channels)
– New and old landing and impact sites

– Special, well known features are portrayed as
they look, but not to scale (generalization)

Problems
No guide for translation or transliteration,
transcription of planetary feature names
No clear guide of names of planetary feature
types (typology varies depending on authors)
Problem with maps: no experience in
marketing and expedition (delivery)
Multilingual is better working with less
languages (one local + English) and more
text
Multiscriptural nomenclature if possible (local-
English-Russian)

Summary
• Planetary maps are different from terrestrial
maps in its use – these serve to help
discover alien worlds
• Map is more than map: readers dont read
long texts but captions and short texts.
Maps can include such texts.
• Bilingual text and nomenlcature: good fro
unerstanding, good for scientific
international work
• Maps here are guides for the reader who
asks: „What’s there???”
Our goal
• Have fun with the map
• and
• Learn as much as possible from maps about
alien landforms, history of discovery.
