Short Quotations
• - Fewer than 40 words.
When quoting :
- Incorporate it into your paragraph and enclose it in double quotation
marks “..……”.
- Induce the author , year of publication, and page number.
Example:
Long or Block quotations
• - Any quotation containing 40 or more words should be formatted as
a block quote.
When quoting:
-Don’t use “.....” quotation marks.
-Place a period after the end of the quote rather
than after a citation.
-Block quote should start on a new line and
indent ½ inch from the left margin.
Long or block quotations ( if there
are additional paragraphs):
We indent the first line of each
an additional half inch.
Block quotation with an embedded
source.
• - If your block quotation contains
a citation from another
source , include it in the quotation.
However , you don’t need to cite
the quoted source in your reference
page.

Example:
Citation with missing elements.

- All elements are present.


- Missing author.
- Missing title.
- Missing date.
- Quotations from sources without page numbers.
All elements are present.

• In text – Citation:
When all elements are present:
Example:

Citation with missing
author.

• In text – Citation :
(Title, year). OR Title ( year).
Example:

“ The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog” (Fox in Socks,2007).
Note: italicize titles of books.
Citation with missing Title.
• In text – Citation:

(Author, year).
Author (year).
Citations with missing date.
In text – Citation:
( Author, n.d.) OR Author (n.d.)

Note: (n.d.) means no date.


Quotations from sources without pages:
One paragraph:

“ The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog” ( Seuss,2007,para.5).

More than one paragraph:

“ The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog” (Seuss,2007,paras.5-6).
