INTRAVENOUS

FLUID
ADMINISTRATION
Introduction
In 1861 THOMAS GRAHAM
investigated a substance as
crystalloids and colloids
depending on the ability to
diffuse through a parchment
membrane. Intravenous fluid are
similarly classified based on their
ability to pass through capillary
walls that separate the
intravascular and interstitial fluid
compartment
Introduction
• Crystalloids solution are electrolyte
solutions with small molecules that
can diffuse freely from intravenous
and interstitial compartments.

• Colloid fluid is a saline solution with

large solute molecule that don’t pass
readily from plasma to interstitial
fluid. The retained molecule in a
colloid fluid create an osmotic force
called the colloid osmotic pressure
or oncotic pressure that holds water
in vascular compartment.
