INTRODUCTION

Manufacturing is process in which raw materials are transformed into

finished goods
*What is the term additive manufacturing mean ?
• In subtractive we start with stock and remove material to get the net
shape(conventional machining)
• In additive manufacturing we start with nothing and add material to get
the net shape
ADDITIVE VS SUBTRACTIVE
SUBTRACTIVE MANUFACTURING
Start with the Remove material Until you have
Block of metal of the block the desired product

ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING
Start with Gradually add metal Until you have
nothing layer by layer the desired

NOTHING
WHAT IS ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING:

• The term ‘additive manufacturing ‘ was

given by the ASTMF42 committee
• ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING(AM) is the
process of making 3D objects from
computer model data by joining
materials layer by layer under control
using a 3D printer ,as opposed to
subtractive manufacturing
methodologies.
ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING HISTORY

 1860:Willieme
• Photo sculpture method to recreate pictures in 3D
 1890:Blanther
• Layered method to create topographical relief maps
 1951:Munz
• Basis of stereolithography techniques introduced
 1968:Swainson
• 3D polymerization with laser beam
 1971:Ciraud
• Powder process proposed

TYPES OF ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING:

1. Vat photo polymerization

2. Sheet lamination
3. Powder bed fusion
4. Material extrusion
5. Directed energy deposition
6. Material jetting
7. Binder jetting
1.VAT PHOTOPOLYMERISATION:
2.SHEET LAMINATION:
ADVANTAGES OF AM:

• FREE OF COMPLEXITY
• NO ASSEMBLY REQUIRED
• REDUCING TOOL USAGE
• OPTIMIZATION
• YOU CAN IMPROVE RELIABILITY
• COMSUMER CAN BUY PRODUCTS AT LOWER PRICES
• MATERIAL WASTE REDUCTION
• LEAD TIME REDUCTION
• STRONG AND LIGHT WEIGHT PARTS
• FAST DESIGN
DISADVANTAGES OF AM:

• - Building volume is limited according machine,

• - Limited amount of material powder types is available,
• - The price of the material is high due to powder manufacturing
process cost,
• - Supports are needed in manufacturing process,
• - Surface quality,
• - Residual stresses.
APPLICATIONS OF AM:

• Aerospace industry
• Biomedical
• Automative industry
Future scope:

• Additive manufacturing gives every body to such facilities from a

digital design for making physical 3Dobjects
• Design software for additive will become more integrated and easier
• Additive soft ware innovation will play catch up
• Increased focus on machine connectivity
• The continued convergence of AM and AI
• Am will drive distributed manufacturing
• The next wave of additive growth in MES
CONCLUSION

• Additive manufacturing(am)also known as 3d printing the process of

joining materials to make objects from three dimensional(3d)model
data ,usually layer by layer
• Has many advantages over the convention machining process
• Sevan types of additive manufacturing
• AM allows the creation of lighter and more complex designs
• It is highly efficient and economical
