person, animal, or plant lives or operates.

Environment broadly includes everything


external to ourselves, including the physical,
natural, social and behavioral environments.

Environmental Health
Environmental health refers to aspects of human
health that are determined by physical, chemical,
biological, social and psychosocial factors in the
environment.

Environmental health is the branch of public health


that: focuses on the relationships between people
and their environment; promotes human health and
well-being; and fosters healthy and safe
communities.

Why is the environment important
for health?
Everyone need safe, healthy and supportive environments
for good health.

The environment in which we live is a major determinant of


our health and wellbeing.  

We depend on the environment for energy and the materials


needed to sustain life, such as:
 Clean air
 Safe drinking water
 Nutritious food
 Safe places to live

Overall, the report indicates that
the environment can be a major determinant of
our health and how we live.

The environment has the potential


to affect physical health (such as, respiratory
problems due to air pollution) and
mental wellbeing (such as, poor
mental health associated with drought conditions).

IMPROVE OUR ENVIRONMENT TO
IMPROVE OUR HEALTH

Clean air and water, sanitation and green spaces, safe


workplaces can enhance people's quality of life: reduced mortality
and morbidity, healthier lifestyles, improved productivity of
workers and their families, improve lives of women, children and
elderly and are crucial to mental health.

Living in a clean environment is so important to your


physical health as well as your overall sense of well-being.

Overall, a clean and healthy environment lowers stress and


contributes to a positive outlook on life.

Why Is Global Environmental
Health Important?
Clean air, water, plants, and food supplies are essential for
our personal health and wellbeing.

The relationship between the environment and humanity is


one of interdependence—each affects the other.

Therefore, just as our actions and choices affect the


environment, the health of the planet  influences our own
personal health and wellbeing, as well as
our communities, families, and economies.
