What is Chemistry?

Chemistry is the study of matter—what it

consists of, what its properties are, and how
it changes.
Chemistry is one branch of Science.

Chemistry is the study of matter.

What is Matter?

Matter is anything that occupies space and has mass. All physical objects
are composed of matter, and an easily observed property of matter is its
state or phase.

States of Matter

Solid
• Solid don’t change shape easily.
• Solid particles are in an aligned
array.
• Solid particles (ions, atoms, or
molecules
don’t move around).

Liquid
• Liquids take the shape of their
container.
• Liquids have surface tension.
• Liquid particles move around.

Gas
• Gas is invisible.
• Gas particles move around freely.
Who is Bohr and what is his
connection in Matter?

Bohr's greatest contribution to

modern physics was the
atomic model. The Bohr
model shows the atom as a
small, positively charged
nucleus surrounded by
orbiting electrons.
Bohr was the first to discover
that
electrons travel in separate orb
its
 around the nucleus and that
the number of electrons in the
outer orbit determines the
properties of an element.
The chemical element
bohrium (Bh), No. 107 on the
periodic table of elements, is
named for him.

What is Atom?
