MANURE AND FERTILIZERS

Manure
Manure: an organic fertilizer made from biodegradable
domestic waste
Types of manure:
> Compost
> Vermicompost
> Green manure
Compost: it is a type of manure which is produced from the
plants and animal waste by action of microbes

Vermicompost: It is the type of manure which is produced by degradation

of organic waste through the consumption by earthworm
Advantages of manure
It increases number of friendly microbes
It increases texture of the soil
It increases soil fertility, water holding capacity and aeration
It reduces soil erosion
It is cheap

     Disadvantages of manure

They have less of nutrients as compared fertilizer
Manure are bulky and not easy to store
Green manure: It is a type of manure which is produced by the
sowing and back ploughing of fast growing crops EG: alfalfa
Fertilizers

1. Fertilizers are  chemical substances , rich in specific nutrients.

2. Fertilizers are produced in  factories .
3. Fertilizers are rich in plant nutrients like Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium.
4. Some examples of fertilizers are  urea ,ammonium sulphate , super
phosphate , potash , NPK  etc.

ADVANTAGES OF FERTILIZERS
5. Fertilizers are nutrient specific and are available in concentrated form .
6. These are required in small quantities
7. These are easy to store , transport and use.
8. Use of fertilizers increase the crop yield within a short period of time
• DISADVANTAGES OF FERTILIZERS
1. Excessive use of fertilizers makes the soil less fertile .
2. They also cause water pollution in case of surface water run-
off.
3. They do not provide any humus to the soil
4. Therefore ,in order to maintain the fertility of the soil , we
have to substitute fertilizers by organic manure.
Types of pollution:

1. Waterway Pollution
2. Chemical Burn
3. Increased Air Pollution
4. Soil Acidification
5. Mineral Depletion

How to minimize chemical fertilization:

More efficient use of animal manure and greater use, in rotations,

of nitrogen-fixing crops – such as legumes which convert nitrogen
from the air into a form that is biologically useful – will be crucial
to replace synthetic nitrogen as part of the process of rebuilding
soil fertility. We can also use the waste accumulated from
vegetables and fruits as natural fertilizers.
While chemical fertilizers have their place increasing plant nutrients in
adverse weather conditions or during times when plants need additional
nutrients, there are also several harmful effects of chemical fertilizers.
Some of the harm chemical fertilizers may cause include waterway
pollution, chemical burn to crops, increased air pollution, acidification
of the soil and mineral depletion of the soil.
