Natural disasters are naturally occuring

destructive incidents,without the mediation of

man,causing harm to human lives
property,environment & economy
Drought
* Long term desrease of rain, due to the change of the pattern of rain
fall is known as drought
* Derease of the amount of rain fall during a given time period & as
well as the change of the rain fall pattern cause droughts
Reasons for drought

Natural causes
*change of timely monsoon winds because
of the change of water currents
*dry winds
*EL-NINO phenomenon
* change of rain
fall pattern scarcity
Human causes
*Irregular water usage *decrease of rain of water DROUGHT
*Irregular soil usage fall
*Deforestation
*release of greenhouse gases to the
environment
*As srilanka is an island, wind pattern basically affects the rainfall
Method of Time period Region/zone
rainfall
south-west monsoon may- september wet zone

north-west monsoon november-february dry zone

convectional/intersoonal march-april all regions

rain
september-octomber
Drought disaster management
there are 3 main steps that should be followed when managing any diasater
* Readiness to face the disaster
*mitigation of the damages caused by the disaster
*adaptation to live with the disaster

Some of the measures that can be taken in drought disaster

management
> Planning agricultural activities with the view of conservation of water
- Practising economic water supply methods
- Cultivating drought rasistent crops
> Improving methods of collecting rain water
- Increasing the capacity of reservoirs
- Usage of methods to collect rain water domestically
> Usage of alternatives to hydropower for thee genaration of power
eg:- Wind power,Solar power etc.
Flood
# Inundation of a usually uninundating area, due to heavy rain fall in a short period of time
is known as a flood
floods can be categorised as below...........

Floods due to over- these floods occur due to the

over flowing of rivers and other
flowing
water ways

this situation occurs due to the

Instantaneous floods blockage of water drainage
systems in urbun areas
Reasons for flood
* high rain fall
*removal of forest cover
*blockage of water drainage
systems
*irregular land use
*irregular land filling
Influences due to floods

# loss of lives
# damage to houses,property
and roads
# failure of power
supply,transportation and
public services
# spread of communicable
diseases after floods due to
contamination of water
sources
Management of flood disaster
< leaving partially inundated houses as it is dangerous to stay in them
< having identified a place and a method to keep goods securely
during a flood
< having prepared with battery powered radio
< having prepared a disaster kit, contains water, dry food stuff and other
essential items to take in the cae of leaving home
< disconnecting the power suppy of the houses and refraining from
touching electrical iems while being in water
LANDSLIDES /
EARTHSLIPS

* Slipping down of soil layer in slopy regions in highlands can be

considered as a landslide
landslides are a common disaster in central hills of srilanka.
places of landslide danger are identified in some other districts, also
those areas are in
badulla,nuwaraeliya,mathale,kandy,kegalle,monaragala,kurunegal
a,rathnapura,kaluthara,galle,mathara and hambanthota districts
what happening during a landslide is the slipping down of a lump of
soil or a layer upon another layer under gravity
Pre-signs of a landslide

. receiving more than 100 mm of rainfall within

24 hours
. appearing new cracks on the surface of the slope
. appearing cracks on building
. sudden leakng of muddy water on slopes
. sudden surface run-off of water or disappearing
of springs
Mangement of landslides
*removing the slide initiation area .
*briging down water using pipe lines.
*diging conteur ditches to drain rain water
down the slope witout letting it soak into soil
LIGHTNING & THUNDERING

There are tiny water

droplets and ice
crystals in
cumulonimbus clouds
because of air
currents,those water
droplets and ice
crystals are rubbed
each other thus, they
becaume charged

Positive charges collect in the top layer of the cloud and negative charges collect
in the botttom layer of the cloud positive charges are genarated on the earth
right below the cloud when the amount of charges reach a certain leval an
electrical discharge occurs it is known as lightnng and thundering
there are 3 types of lightning........

#Earth lightning
is an electrical discharge that transfer
from a cloud to the earth
#cloud lightning
is an electrical discharge that transfer
through the cloud or between two
clouds
#air lightning
is an electrical discharge that
transfer from acloud into the air
Management of lightning hazards

* keeping the electrical

appliances disconnected from
the circuits
*refraining from using and
touching metal equipments
*refraining from using telephone
Things to avoid during a lightning weather codition

+ refraining from being under/near tall trees

+ refraining from driving open vehicles
+ refraining from being in wet places
+ avoid being in open areas
