President Rodrigo Duterte implemented Martial Law, a law
wherein military forces control an area rather than by the police
just to stop the rebellion of the terrorists known as the Maute
group, a group who disrupt the quietness of the Marawi City
and want to change the governance in the Philippines.

Topic: Martial Law
The recent siege and continuous terror attacks in Marawi City
took us by surprise making President Rodrigo Duterte to
declare Martial Law in Mindanao until December 31, 2017.
With Martial Law likely to be extended at the end of the year ,
what assurance do we have that safeguards the whole country
against abuse?

Sa pagdedeklara ng Batas Militar sa Mindaao, marahil hindi na
ito tungkol sa kung ano ang nakabubuti man o nakaaabuso,
dahil sa huli, ang katotohanan – sa anumang digmaan hindi

After all, the war against terrorism isn’t the government’s or the

CONCLUSION
Topic: Martial Law
Martial Law left human rights abuses during President
Ferdinand E. Marcos regime. Many of us fear that history may
repeat itself. But with the assurance of President Duterte that his
administration will take measures so people’s rights will be
protected, we can only say and sigh that this administration will
not destroy our trust – again.

Kung hindi naging mabilisan ang pagproklama ni Pangulong
Duterte ng Batas Militar, maaring hawak na ng Maute Group

kung kaya hindi maikakailang ang mabilisang implementasyon
ay mabisa nga

INTRODUCTION
reaction+news peg

It was a clarion call and the sounding is most

timely. In the observance of press conferences
this year, campus journalists nationwide are
called to be the government’s ally in protecting
human rights – even at the school level.
BACKGROUND
The call came about after reports of alleged
human rights violations plagued the Duterte
administration in its war vs. drugs. This seems to
be a herculean task, but with the power of the
press, we can safeguard this country from
human rights abuses.
Argument 1 + Proofs + Interpretation
History tells us how the press brought about change
in the country. Jose Rizal used it to ignite the
nationalistic spirits of the Filipinos to end the 300
years rule of the Spaniards. Ditto Sarmiento of UP
Collegian penned the abuses of Marcos regime and
eventually shattered the dictator. Both relied on the
power of the pen to protect the Filipinos from
abuses.
Argument 2 + Proofs + Interpretation
But the enemy has changed today, human rights violators
have penetrated the country. In a report of the Commission
of Human Rights (CHR), 3 out of 10 Filipinos are suffering
from human rights violations. What is more alarming is
DepEd’s report that even school children became victims of
such violations. The death of Kian Delos Santos, a Senior
High School student of Caloocan City, proved it so. These are
not mere statistics, but number that prove that violators
crippled even in schools.
Counterproposition+ Concrete
Solution
With this threat, what we, the campus journalists, can do to
protect the basic rights of every Filipino is plain and simple.
We just only need a page or two in the school paper
drumming up awareness on the students’ rights. Even
veteran investigative journalist Malou Mangahas believes
that an article about how one can protect himself from
human right abuses can ripple im the whole school
community, and eventually shield every schoolchildren from
human rights violators.
Conclusion
Tie up (Summary) + Strike/Punch
The power of the pen is double-shielded: it
combats the violators but it also protects
the weak and the needy. And it takes one
responsible campus journalist to sling the
right shot in protecting human rights.
