STOPPING SIGHT DISTANCE

TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING

ENGR. BENEDICTO A. AMORA, JR

AT THE END OF THE SESSION YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO:

• SOLVE PROBLEMS APPLYING THE STOPPING SIGHT DISTANCE

FORMULA
PROBLEM
DEFINITION

STOPPING SIGHT DISTANCE (SSD):

• The minimum sight distance required for a driver to stop a vehicle after seeing an
object in the vehicle’s path without hitting that object.

• Takeaway: AASHTO recommended conservative tr value of 2.50sec for stopping

decision.
𝑑 𝑟 =𝑣 𝑡 𝑟 𝑑𝑏=
𝑣2
2𝑔 ( 𝑓 ± 𝐺)

𝐾 . 𝐸 .= 𝑃 . 𝐸
WHERE:
½
v = design speed in m/s 𝑣2
𝑑 𝑏 =
t = perception-reaction time 2𝑔

g = acceleration of gravity
f = coefficient of friction between tires and pavement
G = average grade/slope, dimensionless ratio (m/m) (+ inclined / - declined)
SSD FORMULA:

WHERE:

v = design speed in m/s

t = perception-reaction time
g = acceleration of gravity
f = coefficient of friction between tires and pavement
G = average grade/slope, dimensionless ratio (m/m)
SAMPLE PROBLEM 1:
A car moving at 80kph on a level ground suddenly sees an obstruction 76m ahead. If
the perception reaction time is 0.50sec and the coefficient of friction between the tires
and pavement is 0.40, how far the from the obstruction will it stop?

SOLUTION:

Given:
v = 80 kph or 22.22 m/s, tr = 0.50 sec, f = 0.40, G = 0, g=9.81m/s^2

𝑣2
𝑆 =𝑣𝑡 𝑟 +
2 𝑔( 𝑓 ± 𝐺 )

( 22.22 𝑚 / 𝑠 )2
𝑆 =22.22 𝑚 / 𝑠 ( 0.50 𝑠 )+
2 ( 9.81 ) (0.40 ± 0 )

11.11m + 62.91m = 74.02m; Distance from obstruction = 76m-74.02m = 1.98m

SUMMARY:

WHERE:

v = design speed in m/s

t = perception-reaction time
g = acceleration of gravity
f = coefficient of friction between tires and pavement
G = average grade/slope, dimensionless ratio (m/m)
