 Understand the characteristics of magnet

 Understand about magnetization and demagnetization

Where does it come from?
Magnetite, also known as lodestone, is a naturally occurring
rock that is a magnet. This natural magnet was first discovered
in magnesia and was named after the area in which it was
discovered.
The properties of magnets
• It has two poles
• Magnetic domains are arranged in line
• The places where the magnetic force is strongest are called the poles
of the magnet.
• Different poles attract, similar poles repel
• Magnetic field

3 magnetization methods

• By induction

• By rubbing / stroking

• By giving electric current

Induction (bring a magnet closer to the object)
Determining the new magnetic poles
Stroking/rubbing method

• In one direction

• May not change the rubbing

direction during the

magnetization.
Determining the poles of the new magnet

The last part touching the

magnet will have an opposite

pole to the stroking pole.

Electromagnet

When the switch is connected,

the nail will have magnetic force

and able to lift magnetic object.
