 Students should be able to identify the rules of
gerunds’ structures.
 Students should be able to understand and use
gerunds.
Gerunds : introduction
 A gerund is the – ing form of a verb used as a
noun. A gerund is used in the same ways as a
noun, as a subject or as an object.
 Example :
 Playing tennis is fun.
 We enjoy playing tennis.
 He’s excited about playing tennis.
Using gerunds as the objects
of prepositions
 A gerund is frequently used as object of
preposition.
 We talked about going to Canada for our
vacation.
 To is a preposition, not part of an infinitives
form, so a gerund follows.
 I’m used to sleeping with the window open.

GERUNDS
GERUNDS are used as the objects of certain
verbs.
Examples:
 I enjoy learning English.
 Joe quit smoking.

“Go” + GERUND

 The word "go" + sports or recreational


activities usually take a gerund.
Examples:
 "Let's go shopping“.
 "They went skiing".  (“went”=bentuk lampau

GERUND
GERUND or “-ing” forms follow certain special
expressions. Examples:

I had a hard time finding his house

[waste + expression of time + -ing]
 She sat at her desk writing a letter.
[sit + expression of place + -ing]
 When I walked into my office, I found George
using my telephone.
[find + (pro)noun + -ing]
 We have a lot of fun playing games at the picnic.
 I have trouble __________ Mrs. Marxwell when
she speaks. She talks too fast.
 I spent five hours _______ my homework last
night.
 Olga is standing at the corner ____________ for
the bus.
