Persuasion and Impromptu
Let’s revise

 What is impromptu?
Let’s revise

 What is impromptu?

Answer: Impromptu is when we have to speak on-the-spot,

without any preparation.
Can you share any personal instance in daily
life where you had to persuade someone?
Examples of persuasion
Scenario 1:
Joe: Can I get my own computer?
Mum: No. We already have a computer in the family room that you can use.
Joe: But I want my own in my room.
Mum: Why do you need your own when you can use the one in the family room any
time you want?
Joe: Because I have to share it with everyone else in the family. You know, all the
other kids at my school have their own.
Mum: I don’t think that all the kids at your school have their own computers.
Joe: Well, maybe not everyone but all my friends have their own computers.
Mum: I don’t see any reason for you to get your own computer.
Joe: But I NEED one!
Mum: You don’t need a computer. You can use the one in the family room.
Joe:
Scenario 2:
Joe: Can I get my own computer?
Mum: No. We already have a computer in the family room that you can use.
Joe: But when I’m doing my schoolwork in the family room, I get disturbed. If I had
a computer in my room I could do my homework well and get better grades.
Mum: Hmmm. But I’m still not sure you need a computer of your own. We can
make some rules to follow when someone is working at the computer. How about
no watching TV, talking softly, and going into another room to talk on the phone?
Joe: But then I also have to share the computer with the whole family. Everyone is
always bugging me to get off when I still have homework to do. And sometimes I
can’t do my homework because someone else is using it.
Mum: We can set a time for everyone to use the computer equally.
Joe: But some days I need more time if I have a report or more homework. If you
set a fixed time, I may not have enough time to finish my homework.
Mum: You have a good point there. I’ll think about it.
Let’s persuade! – Role play
 You are a 6-8 year old boy. Convince your mum to let you play video games.

 You are a Dad. Convince your kid to agree to give money to the poor instead of

doing a birthday party.

 You are a stack of old newspapers. Convince the home owner not to throw you

away.

 You are a boy. Convince your mother to let you keep a pet (you can choose any

pet you want!).

 You are the corona virus. Convince the medical people not to make a vaccine.
