1.Apple menu - Access Software Update, System

Creating User Account
Add a User:
 Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then
click Users & Groups.
 Click the lock icon to unlock it, then enter an
administrator name and password.
 Click the Add button below the list of users.
 Click the New Account pop-up menu, then choose
a type of user viz.,Administrator, Standard,
Managed with Parental Controls, Sharing Only.
 Enter a full name for the new user. An account
name is generated automatically which can be
changed only here.
 Enter a password for the user, then enter it again
to verify. A password hint can be created to
remember the password.
 Click Create User.

Changing Login Password

Steps:
 Choose Apple menu > System
Preferences, then click Users & Groups.

Adding an Account:
 Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then
click Internet Accounts.

Yahoo!, or another account provider.

 Enter the account name, password, and other


requested information, then click Set Up.

 If the account added has a list of features on the


right, select the ones needs to be used.

Deleting an Account:
 Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then
click Internet Accounts.

iCloud
 iCloud securely stores the photos, videos, documents, music, apps, etc and keeps them updated across all
the Apple devices one own.

To Setup iCloud:
 Go to Apple icon > System Preferences > iCloud.
 Enter the Apple ID.
 iCloud will be turned on automatically, when signed in.
 Apps that needs to be used with iCloud can be also
selected.

Note: iCloud comes with 5 GB of free iCloud storage, which


can be upgraded to more storage for a small monthly charge.

Installing Apps
 macOS supports disk image(.dmg) or package(.pkg) file formats
 Apps can be bought and downloaded from the App Store.
 To install apps from a disc, insert the disc into the optical drive and proceed with the installation.
 To install apps downloaded from the Internet, double-click the downloaded file, open it, then follow
the onscreen instructions.

Uninstalling Apps
 If an app is in a folder, open the app’s folder to check for an Uninstaller. If an App
Uninstaller is found, double-click it and follow the onscreen instructions.

 If an app isn’t in a folder or doesn’t have an Uninstaller, drag the app from the
Applications folder to the Trash.

 Apps downloaded from the App Store can be uninstalled using Launchpad
 Open Launchpad and position the pointer over an app’s icon
 Press and hold until all the icons begin to jiggle, then click the app’s Delete
button.
 If an icon doesn’t have a Delete button, it can’t be uninstalled in Launchpad.

Note: Apps that are part of macOS, such as Safari and Mail cannot be uninstalled.
However apps that are downloaded from the App Store, websites, or discs can be
uninstalled.

Startup Apps

 Every time the mac is switched on some


programs starts running automatically after
the operating system gets loaded. Such
apps are called startup apps.

Enable/Disable Startup Apps

Enabling/Disabling Startup Apps:

 Click the Login items tab.
 It will show the list of apps that open
every time the system logs in.

manually by clicking the plus sign (+)
button or removed by clicking the minus

Updating the apps

Steps to update the Apps:


 Open the App Store app on the Mac.
 Click Updates in the App Store toolbar
 Use the Update buttons to download and
install any updates listed.

Note: For OS X Snow Leopard or Lion, apps can be updated by choosing Software Update from the Apple menu.

System Dock
 The Dock is a convenient place to keep items that is used frequently.
 Items can be added or removed from the Dock, made larger or smaller, or even hidden altogether.​
 Folders in the Dock are called stacks.
 By default, the Dock comes with a Downloads stack. ​

Add an item: Drag it to the Dock​

Remove an item: Drag the item out of the Dock until Remove is seen.

Note: A small black dot below the icon indicates that the App is open and running.

Mission Control
 Mission Control offers a bird's-eye view of all the open
windows, desktop spaces, full-screen apps, and Split View
spaces, making it easy to switch between them.

To open Mission Control:


 Swipe up with three or four fingers on your Multi-Touch
trackpad
 Press the Mission Control key on the Apple keyboard, or press
Control–Up Arrow.

Mission Control will display the following:


 The current desktop and any desktops that has been added.
 Any windows in full-screen view.
 Any windows in Split View.

Connect to a Wi-Fi network:


 Click Wi-Fi icon in the menu bar. If Wi-Fi is off, then
choose Turn Wi-Fi On.
 Choose a network.
 Enter the password, then click Join.

Connect to a hidden Wi-Fi network:


 Click Wi-Fi icon in the menu bar.
 Choose Join Other Network.
 Enter the network name. Make sure to enter the
network name correctly.
 If the network is secure, choose the Security type,
then enter the password.

Connect to a Wired network:


 Connect an Ethernet cable between the router or
modem and the Ethernet port on Mac.
 Some Macs require USB-C to Gigabit Ethernet
Adapter or the Apple Thunderbolt to Gigabit

Assigning IP address

Using DHCP(Dynamic IP)


 The mac can be configured to receive IP address
dynamically for a wired connection from the
router/modem by selecting “Using DHCP”

Using Static IP
 The mac can be manually assigned IP address for a
wired connection by selecting “Manually”

Ethernet > Configure IPV4: “Using DHCP / Manually”

 PPPoE connection is required

Accessing External Drives
 External drive when connected
to Mac's USB port will be
mounted and displayed on the
desktop automatically.
 It will be also listed in the Finder
in the left-hand column under
Devices.

Note:
 External drive can be also
mounted manually using “Disk
Utility”.
• External Drives can be a Hard
Disk or Flash Drive.

Accessing External Drives

 Make sure the Mac is set to show


mounted drives on the desktop.
 Go to Finder > Preferences > General
and make sure that there is a tick
beside External Drives.
Note:
 Unmounting the drives can be done by
clicking on eject icon present next to
the drive name.

First Aid
 First Aid will check the disk for
errors and attempts to repair it if
necessary.
 If the Mac is unable to repair the
disk, then
 The drive is formatted using a
file system that the mac
cannot read
 The Hard disk is damaged.

Accessing CD/DVD
 Disc has to be inserted into the
optical drive, with the label facing
up or toward the user, until the
drive catches and pulls it in.
 CDs & DVDs preferences can be set
by clicking on Apple icon > System
Preferences > CDs & DVDs.
 CDs & DVDs preferences will not be
available if a CD/DVD drive is not
found in the PC.

Note:
 Built-in optical drives and the Apple
USB SuperDrive accept only
standard 120-mm (about 4.72
inches) round CD and DVD discs.

Burning CD/DVD using Finder
 Insert a blank disc into the optical drive.

 Double-click the disc to open its window, then drag the files and folders you
want to burn to the window.

 Arrange and rename the files.

 Choose File > Burn [disc], then follow the instructions.

Note:
 To burn a disc image (.dmg file) to a disc, Control-click the disc image file,
choose “Burn Disc Image [disc name] to Disc” from the shortcut menu, then
follow the instructions.

 To erase the contents of a rewritable disc, Control-click the CD or DVD drive in


the Finder sidebar, then choose Erase Rewriteable Disc from the shortcut
menu.

Burning CD/DVD using Burn Folder
 Open the window where the burn folder have to be kept.

 Choose File > New Burn Folder, then type a name for the folder.

 New Burn Folder command will appear in the File menu only if the
computer have a CD/DVD drive.

 Drag the items to be burnt, to the burn folder.

 Open the burn folder, then click Burn.

 Insert a blank disc into the optical drive connected to the computer,
then follow the instructions.

Note:
Multiple copies of the same content can be burnt easily using the burn
folder.

Burning CD/DVD using iTunes
 iTunes can burn Audio CDs, MP3 CDs, Data CDs and DVDs

Steps to follow:

 Create a playlist that contains the songs or files you want


to burn to the CD; make sure the items you want to
include have a checkmark beside them.

 Insert a blank disc.

 Select the playlist, then choose File > Burn Playlist to


Disc.

 Select a disc format.

 Click Burn.

Compressing & Uncompressing
Compressed files take up less disk space than uncompressed
files.

Compress an item:

File Vault

 FileVault helps to prevent unauthorized access to the


information on the startup disk by encrypting it with a 256-
bit key.

 FileVault has to be configured separately for each and every


user account in the computer.

Creating a New Partition
Steps:
 Backup the drive.
 Launch Disk Utility.
 Select the hard disk that needs to be partitioned from the left side of
the app.
 Click on the “Partition” tab.
 Click on the + button to add a new partition.
 Specify a name for the new partition.
 Select a filesystem type (Mac OS Extended Journaled is default).
 Choose a size either by manually entering a capacity or by dragging the
slider bar in the partition map.
 Click on “Apply” to create the new partition.

Note: The new partition will behave like a new hard drive, and it will
appear on the Desktop as a new drive which can be ejected, mounted,
formatted, just like a hard disk.

Resizing a Partition
Steps:
 Backup the drive.
 Launch Disk Utility.
 Select the Volume that needs to be resized from the left
side of the app.
 Go to the “Partition” tab and simply drag the
separating bar between existing partitions either up or
down to resize as needed.
 Choose “Apply” to resize the partition.

Note: Resizing an existing partition to a new size allows to


either grow or shrink the total capacity available to a
partition.

Deleting a Partition

Steps:

 Launch the bootcamp assistant.
 Follow the onscreen instructions to repartition the startup disk and download related software drivers for Windows.
 Mac restarts to the Windows installer when the bootcamp assistant gets completed.
 Select the BOOTCAMP partition for installing the windows, then click Format.
 Windows operating system can be used after installing both Windows and Windows Support Software.

 To Switch back to macOS, Select the macOS volume from the Boot Camp system tray in Windows, and restart the Mac.

 To switch from macOS to Windows, select the Boot Camp volume from the Startup Disk preference, and restart the
Mac.

Note: Holding down the Option key after restarting gives the choice
to select between macOS and Windows.

Safe Mode
 Safe mode is a way to start up the Mac so that it performs certain checks and prevents

Taking iCloud Backup

 Go to Settings > iCloud > Backup


 Date and time would be displayed under the Back Up Now
option which shows when the last backup was taken.

Locating iPhone

 The “Find my iPhone” app is normally enabled when users set up their iCloud account for
the first time.
 To manually enable it, go to Settings > iCloud > Find My iPhone > toggle it ON.

Locating iPhone
 Users need to sign into the iCloud website on any PC and choose “Locate My iPhone” from the main menu.

After selecting the device, there are three basic actions that can be performed:

 Play Sound – This option will make the iPhone play a notification sound. This sound will be played at
maximum volume by default, which can hopefully help to track down the phone. Sound can be turned OFF
by tapping “OK” on the iPhone.

 Erase iPhone – If the iPhone is lost and cannot be recovered, this option can be chosen to wipe any
personal data from the iPhone so that sensitive or personal information will never fall into the wrong
hands. The data can be restored with the help of last backup made on the iCloud.

 Lost Mode – This mode when enabled, displays a number to be contacted along with a message on the
screen. This mode will also protect the device with a passcode.

Updating iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Updating the device wirelessly:


1.Plug the device into power and connect to the Internet with Wi-Fi.
2.Tap Settings > General > Software Update.
3.Tap Download and Install. If a message asks to temporarily remove
apps because iOS needs more space for the update, tap Continue or
Cancel. Later, iOS will reinstall apps that it removed.
4.To update now, tap Install. Or tap Later and choose Install Tonight or
Remind Me Later. If Install Tonight option is chosen, just plug the iOS
device into power before going to sleep. The device will update
automatically overnight.
5.If asked, enter the passcode.
