PAST SIMPLE
Use to talk about actions that started and finished in the past

E.g. The war broke out.

Use for actions that happened in the past and we know when exactly it happened
E.g. I went to the cinema last night.

We use WAS/WERE and the table of irregular verbs or we add –ed to the verb
PAST CONTINUOUS
Use for actions that began in the past, lasted a longer period of time and finished in the past
E.g. I was watching TV all night long.

Use for two actions in the past connected with WHEN – one action lasts longer. Shorter action is always in
Present Simple and it interrupts the longer action
E.g. She was sitting in the park when I arrived.

Use for two actions in the past connected with WHILE – in that case we use Present Continuous for both actions
E.g. I was learning English while she was listening to music.

FORM: was/were + -ing form
