COLON RESECTION
PROCEDURE
 Colon resection procedure is
a surgical procedure involves
removal of all or a part of the
colon (Cleveland Clinic,
2022).

INDICATION
 Bowel obstruction
 Crohn’s disease
 Ulcerative colitis
 Diverticulitis
 Colon cancer
 Colon polyps

TYPES OF COLON RESECTION
 Total Colectomy: Total colon is removed.
 Partial Colectomy
 Hemicolectomy; Either left or right side of the
colon is surgically removed.
 Proctocolectomy: Small or all part of colon along
with rectum is removed.
 Sigmoidectomy: Removal of sigmoid colon.

TYPES OF SURGERY
 Open surgery:

A large incision is made on abdomen to perform the surgery. Takes longer time to heal the
incision.

 Laparoscopic surgery:

Several tiny incision are made on abdomen. Less painful.

BOWEL PREPARATION FOR
THE SURGERY
 Patient is asked to stop solid foods after midnight the day before surgery.
 Plenty of clear, non-carbonated liquids are advices to prevent dehydration and to ensure bowel
is clean out.
 Dulcolax (Bisacodyl), Miralax (Polyethylene Glycol) and Gatorade are given a day before the
surgery. It is given to cause diarrhea to clean out the colon for surgery.
 The stool should be CLEAR, once prep is finished.

POST-OP GUIDELINES
 NPO immediately after the surgery.
 Liquids and solids will be introduced as patient recovers.
 Use of incentive spirometer is encourages up to 10 times per hours when awake.
 Sitting up and walking is recommended as tolerated (after 12 hours of surgery).
 Pain medication to manage pain and promote early ambulation. Patient controlled anesthesia
(PCA) machine is used to deliver medication according to patient’s need.
 Vital sign and surgical site wound care.

DISCHARGE
Patient is discharged when:
 Vital sign are stable.
 Pain is managed with oral medication.
 Able to tolerate food.
 Passing gas or have a bowel movement.
 Able to get in and out of bed with minimal assistance.

HOME INSTRUCTIONS
 No heavy lifting (max. 10 lbs)
 No gym workouts.
 No driving
 No baths or swimming
 Low fiber diet

Call for medical help if


 Fever > 38.6 ℃
 Nausea/vomiting
 Worsening pain
 Constipation
 Diarrhea with abdominal cramps
