Antonio Vivaldi
Born Antonio Vivaldi

- Antonio Vivaldi is an Italian composer and violinist,

who left a remarkable spot on the form of concerto and
the style of baroque music.
Antonio Lucio Vivaldi was born on march 4
1678 in Venice, Italy. He lived in Vienna and he
died on July 28, 1741 (aged 63) in Vienna,
Austria.
Antonio was the eldest child and his father’s
name was Giovanni Battista who taught him
how to play the violin.
General Information about Vivaldi

- Antonio was trained to become a priest hood and was named violin
master
- At the Ospedale Della Pieta where he worked as a violin teacher and
he composed most of his work there.
- His unique red hair gave him the soubriquet Il Prete Rosso.
-Vivaldi suffered bronchial asthma as he stopped celebrating
masses. He took his rank as a temporal priest.

-Vivaldi didn’t get married but he was in a relationship with the

-He claims that he had composed 94 operas but only 50 were detected
Such as Giustino (1724), Argippo (1730)…

-He wrote more than 500 concertos. 350 of them are for solo instruments and strings
Some for violin and others for bassoon, cello, flute, viola d’amore, oboe, lute…

-50 sacred vocal compositions.

-Between 1720 and 1730, Vivaldi wrote 6 sonatas for cello and continuo.

- He was one of the creator of trio sonatas three movement (fast, slow, fast)
- From the first year at Pieta, he began composing.
His authoritative set of Concerti appeared for violin
and string orchestra (opus 3) in 1705,1709 and 1711
while in 1719 opuses 4,6,7 were released as well as
one collection of sonata opus 5.
--In 1713, vivaldi performed his first opera, Ottone in Villa at the
Garzerie theater in Vicenza.

--In 1715, he was the leader of 7 composers where he presented

Nerone fatto Cesare.

--In 1716, he wrote 2 operas, L’incoronazione di Dario and

La costanza trionfante degli amori e degli odi
- In 1717 and 1718, The position as the Maestro di Cappella of the
court of prince Philip of Hesse-Darmstadt was given to Vivaldi.
Tito Manlio which is an opera was produced by Vivaldi at this time.

- In 1721, he presented the postral drama, La Silvia in Milan.

He performed new styles of operas in ROME, as the Pope Benedict
XII invited vivaldi to play for him.
- At this time , Vivaldi was working on the Four Seasons which is
the most famous Piece. It consists of 4 concerti (spring, Summer,
Autumn, and winter) of different forms consisting of three
movements with tempos in the following order: fast-slow-fast ,
each resembling its respective season.

- It was performed with an orchestra of : viola as a solo,12 violin,

4 violas, 3 chellos, double bass, and a harpsichord.
- Between 1725 and 1728, Vivaldi wrote
3 operas in less then 3 months which
were premiered in Venice and Florence
and he earned great reputation.
- In these years, op.8 was revealed and 12
concertos appeared. As well as the four
seasons, storm at sea, pleasure and the
hunt.
Style and Influence
- Vivaldi’s music was innovate. He illuminated the
ritualistic and pulsing form of the concerto , in which he
searched for harmonic contrast and introducing
new melodies and themes.
Posthumous Reputation
- During his life, Vivaldi was known in Europe, but his vogue decreased
after his death and especially after the end of the baroque period where his concerto
were completely ignored.

- But in the 20th century, several instrumentals were behind the revival of Vivaldi’s
CONCERTOS due to the similarity in styles such as, Fritz Kreisler’s, Olga Rudge,
Arnold Schering, Louis Kaufman.
- Bach was highly influenced by Vivaldi. Six of Vivaldi’s
concerto were transcribed by Bach for solo keyboard, 3
for organ, and 1 for 4 harpsichords strings. Basso
continuo based upon the concerto for 4 violins, 2 violas,
cello and basso continuo.
