SOLVING PERCENTAGE

PROBLEM
AND ITS TYPE
OBJECTIVES:
 Find the unknown amount in a percent problem
 Find the unknown rate in a percent problem
 Find the unknown base in a percent problem
The three types of solving percentage problem:
 The amount
-the amount ,denoted A, is the part of the whole being
compared to the base.
 The rate
-the rate ,denoted R, is the ratio of the amount to the base.
It is written as a percent.
 The base
-the base, denoted B, is the whole in a problem. It is the
standard used for comparison.
RULES AND PROPERTIES:
PERCENT RELATIONSHIP
Symbols,
Amount = Rate x Base
Example 1
Finding
 an Unknown Amount
What is 18% of 300?
We know the rate, 18%; and the base, 300; the amount is the unknown.
Using the percent relationship, we can translate the problem to an equation.
Rate = 18%
Base = 300
Amount = ?
Amount = 0.18 x 300
Amount = 54
So 54 is 18% of 300.
Example 2
 Finding an Unknown Percent

30 is what percent of 150?

We know the amount, 30, and the base, 150; the rate (what percent) is the unknown.

Base = 150
Amount = 30
Rate = ?
Rate x 150 - 30
Rate = = 0.20 = 20() = 20%
Rate = 20%
30 is 20% of 150
Example 3
Finding
 an Unknown Base
28 is 40% of what number?
We know the amount, 28, and the rate, 40%. The base (what number) is the unknown.
Amount = 28
Rate = 40%
Base = ?
0.40 x base = 28
Base= = 70
Base =70
So 28 is 40% of 70.
Rules And Properties:
The Percent Proportion

Or

=
Example 4
 Solving a problem involving an Unknown Amount
________ is 30% of 150.

Rate = 30%

Base = 150

Amount = ?

100 A – 150 . 30

100 A - 4500

A = 45

The amount is 45. this means that 45 is 30% of 150.

Example 5
 Solving a Problem Involving an Unknown Rate

______% of 400 is 72.

Base = 400
Amount = 72
Rate = ?
-
400 R = 7,200

=
R = 18

The rate is 18%. So 18% of 400 is 72.

Example 6
 Solving A Problem Involving An Unknown Base
40% of is 200.
Rate = 40%
Amount = 200
Base = ?
-
40 B - 200 . 100

-
B = 500
The base is 500, and 40% of 500 is 200.
Example 7
 Solving a Percent Problem

What is 125% of 300?

Rate = 125%
Base = 300
Amount = ?
-
A=
A = 375
So 375 is 125% of 300.
Example 8
 Solving a Percent Problem

34 is 8.5% of what number?

Amount = 34
Rate = 8.5%
Base = ?
-
B=
B = 400
So 34 is 8.5 % of 400.
