ADDICTION
What is Adolescence ?

 The word Adolescence comes from the latin word ‘adolescere’


which means ‘to mature’.
 It is a transitional stage of physical and psychological
development that generally occurs during the period from puberty
to legal adulthood.
 In short it is a period between childhood and adulthood.
 WHO defines
“ an adolescent as any person between ages 10 and
19 which encompasses psychological, social and moral terrain as
well as the strictly physical aspects of maturation”.
Characteristics of adolescent period.
 Adolescence is a vulnerable time as well as the best years of ones
life.
 Teenagers are expected to cope with hormonal changes, puberty,
social and parental forces, works pressures and so on. They are
in conflict with authority and cultural and moral norms of society,
certain developmental effects can trigger a series of defense
mechanism.
 There is increased risk of emotional crises often accompanied by
mood changes and periods of anxiety which often leads to a
number of problems.

PROBLEMS OF ADOLESCENTS
The common teenage problems that teenagers face today
are usually related to:
 Self-esteem and body image
 Substance abuse
 Information overloading
 Suicidal tendencies
 Cyber addiction
 Depression
 Peer-pressure
 Bullying
 Sex abuse.
All of these problems are connected to one another in someway.
 With the growing importance of the internet in everyday life,
more and more people are using various on-line resources each
day.
 The world wide web is informative, convenient, resourceful ,
fun, but also potentially way for internet addiction.
 During the Covid induced lockdown last year, schools shifted
their classes online to safeguard children from the infectious
disease and maintain smooth flow of their lessons.
 Adolescents increasingly use the internet for communication,
education, entertainment and other purposes in varying degrees.
Given they maybe prone to cyber addiction.

 Also known as internet addiction, computer addiction or online


addiction.
 It refers to excessive or compulsive use of internet and computer
leading to impairment or distress.
 Cyber addicts use the virtual fantasy world to connect with real
people through the internet.
 They use internet as a substitution for real-life human connection
which they are unable to achieve normally.
INTERNET ADDICTION DISORDER
Problematic Internet use or pathological internet use.
A growing epidemic characterized by compulsive desire to interact
online through:
 Internet gaming
 Gambling
 Cybersex
 Social networking
 Compulsive surfing the web.
 According to Dr. Kimberly Young, the first psychologist to
document internet addiction “these disorders are similar to
impulse –control disorders”.
 It is usually diagnosed when an individual engages in online
activities at the cost if fulfilling daily responsibilities or pursuing
other interests and without any regard for the negative
consequences.
 Today more than 45% of the adolescents are addicted to internet.
 They use internet as a way to escape from virtual reality.
TYPES OF CYBER ADDICTION
1. CYBER SEXUAL ADDICTION

2.CYBER-RELATIONSHIP ADDICTION

texting, messaging and use of
chatrooms that replace real-life
friends, social interactions and
relationships
3.SOCIAL NETWORK ADDICTION

that is defined by
being overly
concerned without
social networking
sites driven by an
uncontrollable urge
to log on to or social
media devoting so
much time and effort
to social media that it
impairs other
important life areas.
4. NET GAMING ADDICTION

defined as the problematic,
compulsive use of video games
that results in significant
impairment to an individual's
ability to function in various life
domains over a prolonged period
of time.
5.COMPUTER ADDICTION

games such as solitaire,

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
These are the signs you should look out for:
 Being unable to curb or control your online behaviour.
 Hiding your online activity or lying about it.
 Being preoccupied with your time online.
 Using the internet compulsively.
 Regularly using the internet to change your mood.
 You’re unable to stop using the internet or cut back, even when you know you should.
 You increase your internet use in order to gain satisfaction.
 You crave your internet time or are constantly thinking about it.
 You experience withdrawal symptoms, ranging from irritability to restlessness when you try
to reduce your internet use or stop completely.
 You take unnecessary risks as a result of your internet use, whether it’s jeopardising your job
or destroying a personal relationship.
EMOTIONAL SYMPTOMS
The

Feelings of guilt

Anxiety

Depression

Dishonesty

Euphoric feelings when in front of the computer

Unable to keep schedules

No sense of time

Isolation

Defensiveness

Avoiding doing work

PHYSICAL SYMPTOMS

The following symptoms are characteristic of someone who uses the


computer for a very long period of time:

 Backache
 Headaches
 Weight gain or loss
 Disturbances in sleep
 Carpal tunnel syndrome
 Blurred or strained vision
HOW DO CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS
BECOME ADDICTED?
 Children and adolescents may turn to Internet as means of coping
with unpleasant feelings or problems.
 Going online can temporarily relieve the unpleasant feelings and
provide comfort, but gradually lead to unhealthy use of Internet
and computer.
 During the Covid Pandemic ,classes shifted to online mode.
Students are spending most of their time in online classes and
their dependency on internet exponentially increased.
CAUSES

 The Urge for compulsive use of internet is tge result of a desire to


manage unpleasant feelings such as depression, anxiety, stress or
loneliness.
 People have anxiety when they are face to face with people and
find it difficult foe them to interact in real life.
 People become addicted to internet in order to escape from the
harsh realities of life.
WHO ARE AT RISKS?

 Children and adolescents who suffer from anxiety and depression


are at greater risk of cyber addiction since they may use Internet
to cope with their problems.
 Those with other addiction problems such as alcohol and drugs
are also at greater risk. Adolescents who lack social support or
not socially active tend to use Internet as their social networking
sites, and gradually become addicted to it.
HOW TO BREAK INTERNET ADDICTION?
Important tips that may help you to break the addiction.
Recognize underlying problems that may support your addiction such as
depression and anxiety.
Equip yourself with better and healthier coping skills instead of turning to
computer or going online.
Strengthen social support network.
Try to modify Internet use gradually.
record your computer and Internet activities in order to monitor the
seriousness of the problem.
be clear of your objectives when using Internet.
set time limit for computer and Internet use.
replace Internet use with other healthy activities.
HOW TO AVOID CYBER ADDICTION?

 Try to limit time for Internet use and access.


 Set a timer when using a computer or going online to ensure that
you do not exceed your time.
 Try to avoid reality based games that may go non-stop.
 Find other hobbies that does not involve Internet.
 Go out and spend time with friends.
 Plan family activities.
 Parents should monitor their children’s computer and Internet
use.
