TYPE OF GENERATOR COOLING
SYSTEM
TYPICALLY THERE ARE THREE TYPES OF GENERATOR COOLING SYSTEM
1. WATER & HYDROGEN COOLED
2. HTDROGEN COOLED

 The Stator Cooling Water (SCW) system is used to provide a source of
de-mineralize water to generator winding for direct cooling of stator
winding and associated component.
 The primary water is circulated in a closed circuit and dissipates the
absorbed heat to the secondary cooling water(DMCW) in the primary
water cooler.
 Aim of primary water:
* Cooling of the stator windings
* Cooling of the phase connectors and bushings.
 The water used must not contain any contaminants that might have a
harmful effect on the materials used in the primary water circuit. For this
reason, the water must have the following quality criteria :
*Conductivity : < 10 μs/cm.(Preferably 0.5 μs/cm.)
*pH : 6 – 8
*Dissolved O2 : Minimum, preferably less than 100 ppb
*Dissolved CO2 : Minimum, permissible conductivity

 The direct contact between the primary water and the high-voltage
windings cause for a low conductivity of the primary water. During
operation, the electrical conductivity should be maintained below a value of
approximately 1 μ s/cm. In order to maintain such a low conductivity it is
necessary to provide for continuous water treatment.

 During operation, a small quantity of the primary water

continuously passed through the ion exchanger located in the bypass
of the main cooling circuit in order to maintain the conductivity.

Ion exchanger specification:

Volume : 83 liters
Resin made: Lewatit
Resin volume : 56 liters (45 kg)
Nos.: 1x100% capacity
 Need of Alkalizer Unit:
*Corrosion of copper in the primary water circuits of water-
cooled windings, cannot be completely avoided, and in isolated cases
the corrosion products can reduce the cross sectional flow area of the
water distribution system.
*The severity of the corrosion attack can be substantially
reduced by alkalizing the oxygen-poor water.

SOP FOR PRIMARY WATER MAKE-UP :
 N2 fill & purge properly before taking make-up in the system.
 Lineup the source of makeup water from hotwell make-up pump.
 Open the drain before the make -up line isolation valve- 1 for flushing of the make-up
line. Ensure there is no passing through the make-up isolation valve from the flow totaliser.
 Take sample of drain water and check the chemical parameters from DM PLANT.
 The parameters should be :
Conductivity : < 1 μ s/cm. ,Preferably( 0.5 μ s/cm)
pH : 6 - 8
Dissolved O2 : Minimum, preferably less than 100 ppb
Dissolved CO2 : Minimum, permissible conductivity
 Take clearance from DM plant for taking make-up.
 Now isolate the treatment system by closing valve no. 2 & ensure the flow meter
showing “0” reading.
 Open valve no. 1 , slowly open valve no. 3 & N2 vent valve .Regulate the flow up to 3-
5 lpm max.
 Now the make-up water will flow through the totaliser-ion exchanger-fine filter -flow
meter & then to the pump suction pipe. The totaliser will show reading in the display.
 During the operation observe the conductivity of system water & always keep contact
with the control room engineer.
 After taking make-up up to desired level close valve no. 1 & 3 .
 Check there is no passing through the make-up isolation valve from the flow totaliser.
 Check the NaOH dosing system working properly with the logic.
 Fill & purge N2 to ensure a oxygen & other dissolve gas free system.

Nitrogen (N2) gas specification:

The nitrogen gas shall be made available with a purity of 99.99 % v/v.
Contaminants (O2, H2O): not applicable
The remaining 0.01% v/v shall be free of corrosive contaminants.

Requirement of N2 gas in Primary water system:

A nitrogen pressure is maintained above the primary water in the primary water
tank for the following reasons.
• To prevent the formation of a vacuum due to different thermal expansions
of the primary water & tank.
• To ensure that the primary water in the pump suction line is at a pressure
above atmospheric pressure so as to avoid pump cavitations.
• To ensure that the primary water circuit is at a pressure above atmospheric
pressure so as to avoid the ingress of air on occurrence of a leak.

N2 fill & purge procedure:

 Connect N2 cylinder in N2 gas rake.

 Check there is no leakage in rake.
 Open valve ‘a’ & ‘b’ . N2 pressure of PW overhead tank will show in the
pressure gauge ‘2’.
 Slowly open N2 cylinder maintaining pressure <40 kg/cm2 (before pr.
reducer )
 Overhead tank N2 pressure will rise slowly.
 Now vent out N2 by maintaining 0.2 kg /cm2 pressure in tank.
 In the above way do fill & purge 2to 3 times for proper extraction of H2
or other corrosive contaminants.
