CHAPTER 8 ROTATIONAL

KINEMATICS
SECTION 8-1 ROTATIONAL MOTION
The general motion of a rigid object will include
both rotational and translational components.

For example:
The motion of a wheel on a moving bicycle;
A wobbling football in flight is more complex case.

Rotations with fixed axis

pure rotation
Two definitions of a pure rotation:
 A rigid body moves in pure y
rotation if every point of the
body moves in a circular
path. The centers of these
circles must lie on a common p B

straight line called the axis of A
x
rotation.
 Any reference line z
perpendicular to the axis
(such as AB in Fig 8-1) Fig 8-1
moves through the same
angle in a given time interval.
8-2 THE ROTATIONAL VARIABLES

1. Angular displacement
2. Angular Velocity
3. Angular Acceleration

ROTATIONAL QUANTITIES AS VECTORS
ROTATIONAL QUANTITIES AS VECTORS
ROTATIONAL QUANTITIES AS VECTORS
Problem No 1 A fan blade is initially rotating an angular speed of 48.6 rpm
(revolutions per minute). It slows down and eventually comes to rest in a time of
32 seconds after turning through a total of 8.8 revolutions. Find
(a) the average angular velocity and
(b) the average angular acceleration of the fan blade.
Problem A diver makes 4 complete revolutions on the way from a 40-m platform
to the water below. Assuming zero initial vertical velocity, calculate the average
angular velocity for this drive.
