Hello

Grade 7 Students
Did you know?
1.The human heart weighs less than 1 pound.
However, a man’s heart, on average, is 2 ounces
heavier than a woman’s heart.

2. The average heart is the size of a fist in an adult.

3. An adult brain weighs about 3 pounds.

4. The human eye blinks an average of 4,200,000

times a year.
Objectives:
Estimate or approximate the measures of quantities
1.
particularly the length, weight/mass, volume, time, angle,
temperature, and rate

Convert Measurements in both Metric and English Systems

2. particularly Length, weight/mass, volume, time, temperature, and
rate

Solve problems involving the conversion of units of

3.
measurements.
Estimation of a measure is a highly reflective
activity that avoids the procedural aspects of
using rulers and scales and getting answers. It
helps develop benchmarks for units and enhances
familiarity with important units. It develops flexible
thought patterns for each measurement area.
History of
Measurement
One of the earliest tools that
human beings invented was
the unit of measurement. In
the 3rd century BC Egypt,
people used their body parts to
determine measurements of
things; the same body parts
that you used to measure the
assigned things to you.
The forearm length, was called a cubit.
The handspan was considered a half cubit
The palm was considered 1/6 of a cubit.

Can check you how many handspans your

forearm length is?

The Egyptians came up with these units to be

more accurate in measuring different lengths.
However, using these units of measurement had a
disadvantage. Not everyone had the same forearm length.
Discrepancies arose when the people started comparing
their measurements to one another because
measurements of the same thing differed, depending on
who was measuring it.

Because of this, these units of measurement are called

non-standard units of measurement which later
evolved into
what is now the inch, foot and yard, basic units of
length in the English system of
measurement.

To estimate and approximate the length of an object, familiarize the different units of lengths where
the meter is the basic unit
Gm, Mm, km, hm, dam, meter, dm, cm, mm, μm, nm

To estimate and approximate the mass of an object, familiarize the different

units of mass where gram is the basic unit,
Gg, Mg, kg, hg, dag, gram, dg, cg, mg, μg, ng

To estimate and approximate the volume of an object, familiarize the different

units of mass where liter is the basic unit,
GL, ML, kL, hL, daL, Liter, dL, cL, mL, μL, nL
Let us try! Identify the appropriate unit to
measure of the following:
1. Width of a notebook
2. Distance of your school to Centennial Park
3. Body temperature
4. A glass of orange juice
5. Weight of a baby
HISTORY OF MEASUREMENTS

The English System of Measurement was widely used

until the 1800s and the 1900s when the Metric System
of Measurement started to gain ground and became the
most used System of Measurement worldwide. By 1960,
CGPM released the International System of Units (SI),
which is now being used by most countries, with the
biggest exception being the United States of America.
HISTORY OF MEASUREMENTS
Since our country used to be a colony of the United States, the
Filipino people were schooled in English instead of the Metric
System of Measurement. Thus, the older generation of
Filipinos is more comfortable with English Systems than the
Metric System, although the Philippine have already adopted
the Metric System as its official measurement system.
