The Fanboys
Which words are they? (keywords)

What do they do?(definition)
 The coordinating conjunctions (fanboys) are used
to join together two (or more) of the same part of
speech.
 Bob and Sally went on a walk.
 Ralph tried but failed.
 The red and yellow shirt was too small.
 I will need to find my keys, or I will need to
walk to work today.
What’s the catch?(why are they
important?)
 You only need punctuation with the fanboys in two
situations:
 when you are joining together two complete
sentences
 when you have a list of items in a series
Strategies?
1. Use the control + F (find) feature to find fanboys
in your paper
2. Put your finger on the fanboys
3. Determine if there is a complete sentence before
it and after it
4. If so, you need a comma
5. If not, you SHOULD NOT use a comma
Example sentence 1:
 Bob went to the store, and he bought some bug spray.

 Is there a fanboys?

 Isthere an independent clause before and after the


fanboys?

 If yes, you need the comma.


Example sentence 2:
 Susie went to Portillo’s and ordered French fries.

 Is there a fanboys?

 Isthere an independent clause before and after the


fanboys?

 If no, you do not need the comma.


Sample Sentences
I stole a car but didn’t get away with it.
 I did not do my homework, nor do I feel bad about
it.
 Some people have a hard time with fanboys, and
other people do not.
 The children ate a large lunch, took a long nap,
and still drove their parents crazy.
Comma or NO Comma?
Punctuating the fanboys properly will
make your papers better and your
teachers much happier.
