energy works in everyday life
What is
01 Chemical
Energy?
Chemical Energy
Energy stored in the bonds of atoms and
molecules. It is the energy that holds these
particles together.
To dig deeper
In a chemical reaction energy is either released
or absorbed during a chemical reaction.

Exothermic Chemical
Reaction
Exothermic reactions are reactions or
processes that release energy, usually in the
form of heat or light. In an exothermic
reaction, energy is released because the total
energy of the products is less than the total
energy of the reactants.
Endothermic Chemical
Reaction
Endothermic reactions are reactions that require
external energy, usually in the form of heat, for the
reaction to proceed. Since endothermic reactions draw
in heat from their surroundings, they tend to cause
their environments to cool down. They are also
generally non-spontaneous, since endothermic
reactions yield products that are higher in energy than
the reactants.

Why do we get heat energy?
Chemical Bond Considering the stucture of water, we all know that a
single water molecule is made up of 1 oxygen atom,
Formation and 2 hydrogen atom. Both hydrogen atom is
connected to the oxygen atom. So there is a presence
of chemical bond.

Important note
Due to the chemical bond between the hydrogen
atom and the oxygen atom, there exist ENERGY.
There is energy between hydrogen and oxygen due
to chemical bond which results to chemical energy.
If there is a chemical
bond, there exist
chemical energy.
Does this molecule possess chemical
energy?
Does this molecule possess chemical
energy?

Yes, because there is a

chemical bond.
What happens to your body
when you intake glucose?
What happens to your body
when you intake glucose?

We all know that after digestion it

releses chemical energy. Our body will
transfer them into other useful form of
energy.
UNIT OF MEASUREMENT
UNIT OF MEASUREMENT

The S.I. unit of energy is Joule.

Also the measurement of heat
energy is in form of calories.

Energy in
Everyday Life
We know that plants need solar energy to produce sugar from carbon
dioxide to water. Sugar, water and carbon dioxide stay together by
chemical bonds that hold the chemicals together.

For instance, all sugars consist of oxygen, carbon and hydrogen atoms
held together by chemical bonds. These atoms do not connect together
automatically; rather some energy is required to make them stay together.

Plants use solar energy to put the hydrogen, the carbon and the oxygen atoms as a whole in
the form of sugar. This is a suitable example of energy transformation where energy is
transformed from one form to another. Here, solar energy is transformed into chemical
energy and prevents from falling apart.
Chemical Energy in the body

The form of potential energy in

which energy is contained in
chemical bonds is chemical energy.
Some chemical energy contained in
the bar is converted into the fuel
molecules that the body requires,
but some of it is emitted, such as
heat, for example.
Interesting
Facts
Our bodies use chemical energy to perform daily
functions. During an exothermic chemical
reaction, chemical energy in the form of heat is
released. Plants perform a chemical reaction each
time they use sunlight to make their own food
during photosynthesis.
