What is an annotated bibliography?

• A varied list of sources

• Books/anthologies/biographies
• Peer-reviewed articles
• Book reviews/interviews/lectures
• It is formatted like a reference page
• American Psychological Association
(APA)
• It includes an annotation about the
source
• Summary of the source
• Description of the source
• Analysis/Criticism of the source

What is an annotated bibliography?

• An annotated bibliography contains two basic types of information:

• The first type is a formal documentation entry for each source a person
collects, following a professional style for documenting and citing
sources such as APA or MLA. The documentation entry that goes
into an annotated bibliography is the same thing that goes on the list
of sources (e.g. a References or Works Cited page) in an academic
paper.
• The second type is an annotation, which, again, is provided for each
source a person collects. Usually, each annotation includes a brief
summary of the source. But often, it will also offer some other
information, such as details about credibility of the source and an
assessment of the source’s usefulness.

How to write it?

• Citation (APA Style)
• Description of the source
• Who wrote it?
• What does it discuss?
• When was it written?
• Why was it written?
• How does the source relate to the
project
• Is it accurate?
• Is it relevant?
• How does it enhance the research?

Annotated Bibliography
• The format for an annotated
bibliography is similar to that
of a research paper.
• Use one-inch margins on all
sides; note "space before" and
"space after" should be set to
zero
• Double space your entries;
• Alphabetize each entry;
• Hanging indents are required
for citations;
• On the line after the citation,
indent two additional spaces
and write the annotation.

to summarize the main idea(s)
of the source.
•      - What are the main
arguments?
•      - What is the point of this
book/article?
•      - What topics are covered?

Why create an annotated bibliography?

• The Purpose of an Annotated Bibliography

• Literally, an annotated bibliography is a formal list of sources (hence
the word “bibliography”) on a particular research topic that includes
descriptive information about each source (this is what the word
“annotated” means).

Why should you write an annotated bibliography?

• It helps you evaluate the credibility and

authority of your sources so that you can
use the highest quality sources in your
writing
• To understand and be fully informed about
a topic before making judgments and
writing about it
• To distinguish between your views and
biases on a topic and what the research
actually shows
• To assess what research you’ve got so that
you can figure out whether you need to go
out and find more.
