SHADING

DEVICES
• Shading devices are equipments that are used. externally or
internally or in between the building spaces to protect from
direct sunlight Intercepting sunlight before it reaches the walls
and glazing of a building dramatically reduces the amount of
heat entering that building.
SHADING DEVICES ARE USED TO:
• To reduce heat gain during summer, reduce the cooling loads
and therefore minimize costs.
• Improving internal environment for greater comfort.
• Some shading devices improve the internal or external
aesthetics of building. Therefore it is essential to use shading
devices.
• Sun control and shading devices can also improve user
visual comfort by controlling glare and reducing contrast
ratios. This often leads to increased satisfaction
and productivity.
INTERNAL SHADING DEVICES CURTAINS

• Limit the glare resulting from solar radiation.

• Usually are adjustable and allow occupants to regulate
the amount of direct light entering their space.
• Curtains: It is the most commonly used shading device, mostly
used on residential buildings. It is cheaper in comparison and VENETIAN BLINDS
can be found in various varieties, colours and texture. A curtain
also acts as a decorative item.
• Venetian blind: Venetian blinds are basic slatted blinds made of
metal or plastic, wood or bamboo can also be used. Suspended
by a strip of cloth called tapes, all slats in unison can be rotated
through nearly 180 degrees. Slat width can be between 16 and
120 mm, with 25 mm being a common width. VERTICAL LOUVRE BLINDS

• Vertical Louvre blinds: Suitable for many applications in

commercial and public buildings where the control of heat,
light and glare are of concern. It can be used in larger windows
and doors too.
PLEATED BLINDS
• Pleated Blinds: Pleated blinds are shades made from a
pleated fabric (which helps to add texture to a room)
that pull up to sit flat at the top of a window to hide
from sight when open.
• Blackout blinds: Blackout blinds stop light from passing
through and extra tight woven fabrics to help control BLACKOUT BLINDS
the light levels in a room. It is designed to block the
external lights to enter the room.
• Roller blinds: Roller blinds are usually stiffened
polyester, mounted on a metal pole and operated with
a side chain or spring mechanism. Roller Blinds are a
practical blind for everyday use, Block Outs, Sun
Screens and Translucent with a metal or plastic chain ROLLER BLINDS
available, that operates the blind through an aluminum
tube to roll up and down.
EXTERNAL SHADING
• DEVICES
External shading devices can reduce solar heat gain through glazing by up to
80%.
• lighting control: uniform distribution of luminance influence visual comfort
because you can avoid the problem due to the excessive brightness at the
windows and dim light in the inner areas. Some shading devices allow to
create right level of illumination for specific work conditions;
• provide good quality lighting without glare: in winter when the sun is low on
the horizon may create some problem of glare can be eliminated by shading
device
• These can be of three basic types:
1. vertical devices : Vertical devices consist of louvre blades or projecting fins
in a vertical position.
2. horizontal device : Horizontal devices may be canopics, horizontal louvre
blades or externally applied Venetian blinds. this type of device would have to
cover the permitting a view downwards only. Architectural elements like
canopies, verandas, louvres and roof overhangs are the most common types.
3. egg-crate devices : A combination of vertical and horizontal shading
elements commonly used in hot climate regions because of their high shading
efficiencies. The horizontal elements control ground glare from reflected solar
rays. The device works well on walls
