WHO IS EMILY
DICKINSON ???
 Emily Elizabeth Dickinson was born in Amherst,
Massachusetts at December 10, 1830. Although part of a
prominent family with strong ties to its community, Dickinson lived
much of her life in reclusive isolation.

 After studying at the  Amherst Academy  for seven years in her


youth, she briefly attended the  Mount Holyoke Female Seminary
 before returning to her family's house in Amherst.

 Dickinson never married, and most friendships between her


and others depended entirely upon correspondence.

 Most of her writings were wrote during the civil war era and her
poetry examines pain, grief, joy, nature, and art.
 While Dickinson was a prolific private poet, fewer than a dozen of her
nearly 1,800 poems were published during her lifetime.

 Dickinson's poems are unique for the era in which she wrote; they
contain short lines, typically lack titles, and often use slant rhyme as well
as unconventional capitalization and punctuation. Many of her poems deal
with themes of death and immortality, two recurring topics in letters to her
friends.
 . Her first collection of poetry was published in 1890 by personal
acquaintances Thomas Wentworth Higginson and Mabel Loomis Todd
though both heavily edited the content. A complete, and mostly unaltered,
collection of her poetry became available for the first time when scholar
Thomas H. Johnson published The Poems of Emily Dickinson in 1955. She
died the aged of 55 in May 15, 1886.

BOND PAPER) After that choose one member
of the group who will explain why you have
chosen such lines of the poem. (10 minutes will
be given to make the simple slogan and another 5
minutes for the presentation. )

“There is Another Sky”

Emily Dickinson's "There is another sky" is
an innovative, or American, sonnet.
Considering that "There is another sky"
speaks of a worldly place (Amherst,
Dickinson's home) and an otherworldly place,
heaven, the main poetic device is metaphor. The
speaker describes a worldly place with natural
imagery but with otherworldly qualities.
"Another sky" directly means a sky that is not
the sky of the Earth. This "other" sky would
have to be in another place. Presumably , this
would be heaven because only a perfect sky
could be...
ELEMENTS OF THE POETRY

First Quatrain: Physical Sky, Metaphysical Sky

There is another sky,


Ever serene and fair,
And there is another sunshine,
Though it be darkness there;

In the first quatrain, the speaker claims that in addition to the


sky of the physical universe, there is an additional sky in
existence. But this other sky is "ever serene and fair." She
then reports that there is also "another sunshine," which is
capable of shining through darkness in this other place. In the
first half of the poem, the speaker is referring to a boy named
Austin, telling him to forget about the negative events of life
because there are so many happy ones already waiting for
him. Life can be a paradise if one accepts to try new
adventures or start a new one.
Second Quatrain: No Fading in the Metaphysical Universe

Never mind faded forests, Austin,


Never mind silent fields -
Here is a little forest,
Whose leaf is ever green;

The speaker then directly addresses another person, telling him that
he should ignore "faded forests," and she calls the addressee by
name, "Austin," who happens to be the brother of the poet. She then
tells Austin also to ignore the "silent fields.“
In the second stanza, the speaker is talking to Austin, apparently
his/her brother. The speaker talks about this garden, which
represents paradise or the perfect life where pain, suffering, or
any other negative aspects of life, so, he is invited to restart a
new life.
Sestet: Invitation to the Metaphysical Garden

Here is a brighter garden,


Where not a frost has been;
In its unfading flowers
I hear the bright bee hum:
Prithee, my brother,
Into my garden come!

The speaker now claims that the place to which she refers is
"a brighter garden," and this garden never experiences the
killing effects of "frost." Its flowers remain "unfading" while
she listens pleasurably to "the bright bee hum." The final
couplet is the invitation to her brother to come into this
wondrous garden: "Prithee, my brother, / Into my garden
come!"
Summary of the Sonnet “There is
Another Sky”
 The poem is describing a woman
speaking out to her brother Austin.
The woman describes a garden full of
warmth and affection. She tells her
brother that he is welcome in her
garden to escape from the pain he
may be experiencing.
Theme of the Sonnet “There is
Another Sky”
 It is always good to offer compassion and
warmth to others who are suffering because it is
what makes human nature and life stronger.
 A person must always look at the bright side of
life. No matter how hard the circumstances may be
always remember that there is always someone
who is willing to give you a lending hand.
 Another theme is about depression. There will
always be darkness around us but hidden amidst it
is the beauty of the world.
