Chapter 12: Data Acquisition (DAQ)
• Introduction
• Elements of DAQ
• Principles of DAQ
• Examples of DAQ design
Introduction
• Data acquisition is the process of sampling signals that measure real world
physical conditions and converting the resulting samples into digital numeric
values that can be manipulated by a computer.
• Data acquisition systems, abbreviated by the acronyms DAS or DAQ, typically
convert analog waveforms into digital values for processing.
• Data acquisition applications are usually controlled by software programs
developed using various general purpose programming languages such as
Assembly, BASIC, C, C++, C#, Fortran, Java, LabVIEW, Lisp, Pascal, etc.
• Stand-alone data acquisition systems are often called data loggers.

Elements of DAQ
Elements of DAQ (cont.)
Principles of DAQ
• Signal conditioning
• A/D Converter
• System sampling rate
Signal conditioning
• Instrumentation Amplifiers
• Single-Ended and Differential measurements
• Filtering
Examples of DAQ design
• Design a DAQ with requirements:
• Analog output voltage of signal conditioning: 0-5V
• Temperature sensor : LM35, measurement range : 0 – 1000C.
• Distance sensor has output voltage: V0 = 2.5 + S*d with S = 1mV/mm and d = -5cm : 5cm.
Examples of DAQ design (cont.)
• Design a DAQ with requirements:
• Analog output voltage of signal conditioning: 0.5 – 4.5 V
• Temperature sensor : thermistor R25 = 10kΩ and = 3000K measurement range : 0 – 1000C.
