What is Research Ethics?
Research ethics are the set of ethics that govern how scientific and other research is performed at research

institutions such as universities, and how it is disseminated.

The Importance of Research Ethics

- Promote the aims of research, such as expanding knowledge.
- Support the values required for collaborative work, such as mutual respect and fairness.
- They mean that researchers can be held accountable for their actions. Many researchers are
supported by public money, and regulations on conflicts of interest, misconduct, and research
involving humans or animals are necessary to ensure that money is spent appropriately.
- Ensure that the public can trust research.
- Support important social and moral values, such as the principle of doing no harm to others.
Ethical Principles Guiding Research
Honesty
- Strive for honesty in all scientific communications. Honestly report data,
results, methods and procedures, and publication status. Do not fabricate,
falsify, or misrepresent data.
Objectivity
- Strive to avoid bias in experimental design, data analysis, data interpretation,
peer review, personnel decisions, grant writing, expert testimony, and other
aspects of research where objectivity is expected or required.
Carefulness

- Take care in carrying out your research to avoid careless mistakes. You should also
review your work carefully and critically to ensure that your results are credible. It
is also important to keep full records of your research..

Openness

- You should always be prepared to share your data and results, along with any new
tools that you have developed, when you publish your findings, as this helps to
further knowledge and advance science.
Respect for Intellectual Property

- Honor patents, copyrights, and other forms of intellectual property. Do not use
unpublished data, methods, or results without permission. Give proper
acknowledgement or credit for all contributions to research. Never plagiarize.

Confidentiality

- Protect confidential communications, such as papers or grants submitted for

publication, personnel records, trade or military secrets, and patient records.

Responsible Publication

- Publish in order to advance research and scholarship, not to advance just your
own career. Avoid wasteful and duplicative publication.
Legality

- Know and obey relevant laws and institutional and governmental policies.

Animal Care

- Show proper respect and care for animals when using them in research. Do not
conduct unnecessary or poorly designed animal experiments.

Human Subjects Protection

- When conducting research on human subjects, minimize harms and risks and
maximize benefits; respect human dignity, privacy, and autonomy; take special
precautions with vulnerable populations; and strive to distribute the benefits and
burdens of research fairly.
