GRADE 8
×CHAPTER I
5
INTRODUCTION
“English proficiency is associated with a
vast spectrum of factors, and it is indeed
important for teachers to know of these
factors in order to help the learners
appreciate the importance of the
language and to achieve global
competence.” 6
Setting of
the Study

The study will take place at

Megabyte College
Foundation Inc. at Mabical,
Floridablanca, Pampanga
THEORETICAL
FRAMEWORK
This study was anchored on the Cognitive Developmental Theory
of Piaget
“recognized that children are naturally curious about the world
and are active and motivated learners. As they acquire new
experiences, they start to experiment with the objects they come
in contact with. These interactions become meaningful as they
construct their own knowledge about them.”

Statement of the Problem
1. How may the demographic profile of the students be
described in terms of sex and English grades in 2nd quarter?
2. How may the perception of the students on the factors
affecting their English Proficiency Level, be described in
terms of:

 Motivation
 Beliefs
 Learning Strategies
 Learning Environment, and
 Linguistic Distance
10
4. Is there any significant difference on the
perception of students on the factors affecting
their English Proficiency Level with respect to
their sex?
5. Is there any significant relationship between
the perception of students on the factors
affecting their English Proficiency Level and
English grades in 2nd quarter?

11
HYPOTHESES
1. There is no significant relationship between
demographic factors such sex, and English grades
of the students, and the English proficiency of
Grade 8 students of Megabyte College Foundation
Inc.;
2. There is no significant relationship between other
proficiency factors such as motivation, belief,
learning strategies, learning environment and
linguistic distance and the English proficiency of
the Grade 8 students at Megabyte College
Foundation Inc.
Significance of the Study
 The Philippines is said to have a
97% literacy rate wherein many
would interpret that its people have
been in school – not considering
the educational attainment of these
people (Parvis et al., 2012).

Scope and Limitations
The study covered the students in
Megabyte College Foundation Inc. Junior
High School Department, specifically, Grade
8 for the school year 2020 - 2021.

The independent variables in this study were

limited to the personal profile of the students such ,
sex, English grades in 2nd quarter and other factors
associated with the English proficiency of the
respondents such as motivation, beliefs, learning
strategies, learning environment and linguistic
distance.

Research Instrument
× Part I - gathered information
on the Demographic Profile of
the respondents;
× Part II - dealt with the
information on the factors
associated with the English
proficiency of the respondents.
The English proficiency
survey test consisted of 40
items.
Data Collection
The researchers administered the
questionnaires to the respondents with the help
of the teachers. The researchers obtained a one
hundred percent return rate of all the
questionnaires distributed.
Data Analysis
The data that were collected were checked for consistency,
accuracy and completeness, and then these were coded and organized.
These were then processed and were analyzed using the Statistical
Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS).

relationship of demographic profile of
Grade 8 students of Megabyte College
Foundation Inc., such as sex, English
grades for 2nd quarter, and other factors
such as motivation, beliefs, learning
strategies, learning environment and
linguistic distance, to the English
proficiency of the respondents.

Affecting their English Proficiency Level in Terms of Learning Environment.
7. Most (3.61 composite mean) AGREE of the respondents Assessment on the Factors
Affecting their English Proficiency Level in Terms of Linguistic Distance. 47
CONCLUSION
According to Piaget’s Cognitive
Developmental Theory in Acero et al. (2012)
cited by Dr. Gail E. Tompkins (2013),

experiences and “with objects they come in
contact with”.
