WHAT IS AN ADJECTIVE?

An adjective is a word that adds a description to the noun. An adjective can

describe a person, animal, place, thing or tell the number or quantity of the noun
.
For example:

• They live in a beautiful house.

• Ben is an adorable baby.
• This glass is breakable.
HOW CAN YOU FORM AN ADJECTIVE?
In English, We can use suffixes and prefixes to change nouns and verbs into adjectives, or to change
the meaning of an adjective. Some suffixes have a general meaning whilst others simply transform
words into adjectives.
The suffix -less usually means without something whilst the suffix -ful usually means to have something.
01
For example: hopeful ← hope → hopeless

02 Also Not all words can be made into adjectives pairs like this .

For example: homeless (but not: homefull) beautiful (but not: beautyless)

03 The suffix -ish changes nouns and adjectives into adjectives that mean like something

Don’t be childish. (like a child)

The jacket is a bluish colour. (like blue)
HOW CAN YOU FORM AN ADJECTIVE? 04
For materials we can add -en to nouns to create adjectives that mean made of:

For example A wooden chair. A woolen jumper

05 When added to a verb, -able creates adjectives that express ability

For example: Is the water drinkable?

06
We use adjectives that end in -ing to describe the effect of a noun. In the case, the -ing adjective can also be
rewritten as a verb
Erica’s job is boring.
We use adjectives that end in -ed to describe how a person feels. In this case, the verb be an be 07
replaced by a linking verb
Erica is bored with her job
WHAT IS AN ADVERB?
An adverb is a word that modifies (describes) a verb, an adjective, another adverb or even a whole
sentence.

For example:

• They swim well.
• He recently bought an expensive diamond necklace
• The championship league is held annually.
HOW CAN YOU FORM AN ADVERB?
In English, the basic rule is that -ly is added to the end of the adjective: 01
For example
Quick – quickly : I get dressed quickly.
Cheap- cheaply : You can live very cheaply in Italy.

02 If the adjective ends in '-y', replace the 'y' with 'i' and add '-ly':

For example:
Easy – easily : I solved the exam easily
Happy – happily : He smiled happily at me.

03 If the adjective ends in -'able', '-ible', or '-le', replace the '-e' with '-y':

For example:

Gentle – gently : my mom always tells my brother to gently brush the dog
HOW CAN YOU FORM AN ADVERB?
04 If the adjective ends in '-ic', add '-ally':
For example
Basic – basically : She started basically a vegan diet.
Tragic – tragicly : They died tragicly.

05 There are other adverbs that do not end with "-ly" and that are written
the same as adjectives.
For example:
Hard → Hard : He is fighting hard to keep his job.
Fast → Fast : He drives very fast.

06 There are other adverbs that do not end with "-ly", but they are not written the same as
adjectives, in fact they change completely.
For example:

NOTE :
• If modify the verb: it is
placed after the verb. Ana wake up early this morning.
