Teaching and learning traditional Chinese musical instruments in Guangzhou

elementary school: challenges and incentives


Reasons for devising the research

 In today's China, as western music is continuously introduced into the school


education, fewer and fewer primary school students want to learn Chinese
traditional musical instruments.
 Traditional music education is an important part of quality education in
primary and secondary schools.
 Traditional Chinese music is important also in that it is an important Chinese
cultural legacy that should be inherited and passed on from generation to
generation.
 As a student interested in learning traditional Chinese instruments, I believe
it is our responsibility to preserve the traditional Chinese culture and
stimulate the interest of students to learn Chinese music instruments.
Objective of the research

 The main objective of the research is to identify the challenges of learning


Chinese traditional musical instruments and give suggestions on improving the
learning efficiency of Chinese traditional musical instruments.
Research questions

 How many years have you been teaching and learning traditional Chinese musical
instruments? And what instruments?
 What are the initiatives of teaching and learning of traditional Chinese musical
instruments in Guangzhou elementary school?
 Does your school organize the teaching of traditional Chinese musical
instruments?
 What are the challenges of the teaching and learning of traditional Chinese
musical instruments in your working school?
 What measures can be taken to solve the challenges in the learning and teaching
of traditional musical instruments in Guangzhou primary schools?
 How to encourage primary school students to learn traditional musical
instruments, so as to promote and inherit China’s traditional music culture?
Methodology and Strategy

Selection criteria
Participants have been engaged in the teaching of traditional Chinese musical instruments for at
least five years;
Participants have worked in Guangdong for more than a year and have a certain understanding of
local Chinese traditional musical instrument teaching.
Ethical Considerations
Informed consent and voluntary participation
The process of obtaining Consent consists of the following: consent should be given freely
(voluntary), subjects should understand what is being asked of them, and involved persons must be
competent to consent.

Anonymity and confidentiality


The anonymity and confidentiality of the participants was preserved by not revealing their names
and identity in the data collection, analysis and reporting of the study findings.

Data Protection
This study assigns a pseudonym to each participant to maintain their confidentiality. All data is
stored in a secure computer and database, and is protected by a password. The data will only be
stored for 36 months, and then the data will be deleted according to relevant regulations.
Data findings

1. Learning traditional Chinese musical instruments is of great significance to the growth


of students.

2. There are many challenges in teaching and learning traditional Chinese musical
instruments.
Suggestions
1. Improve the cultivation and development of educational resources, innovative teaching
systems.

2. The teaching of Chinese traditional musical instruments should combine our own
geographical advantages and absorb musical cultural resources.

3. In the selection of teaching materials, the school can choose a collection of ethnic
minority music, so that it can not only perform some works with local ethnic music
elements, but also allow ethnic minority music to be inherited and developed.
Uniqueness and limitations
Uniqueness
1. First hand data is collected by using a questionnaire sheet and conducting interviews.
2. The research proposes that Chinese musical instruments can improve students' various abilities,
including concentration, acuity and thinking ability.

Limitations
1. This study only used qualitative surveys to collect the interviewees' views and attitudes on the
research questions.
2. The sample only included 9 interviewees. The interviewed data can only represent the opinions at
the individual level, and cannot represent the statistical data of a large sample.
3. This study chooses the teacher's perspective to determine the challenges and difficulties of
learning Chinese traditional musical instruments. However, students are also an important role in
learning Chinese traditional musical instruments.
