SOLVES ROUTINE AND NON-

ROUTINE PROBLEM INVOLVING

FACTORS, MULTIPLES AND
DIVISIBILITY RULES FOR
2,3,4,5,6,8,9,10,11 and 12

DISTRICT LEARNING FACILITATOR

At the end of the session, the
participants are expected to:
- Recall the rules on divisibility of a
given number
- Use the factors and multiples of a
number in solving the problem
- Apply the steps in solving
problems
Review Divisibility rules on 2,5 and 10

*A number is divisible by 2 if the number is an even

number, that is, if the last digit is 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8.

*A number ending in 0 or 5 is divisible by 5.

*A number ending in 0 is divisible by 10.

Review Divisibility rules on 3,6 and 9

*• A number is divisible by 3 if the sum of all the digits

is divisible by 3
• A number is divisible by 6 if it is divisible by both
2 and 3, that is, the number is an even number and
the sum of its digits is divisible by 6.
• A number is divisible by 9 if the sum of all the
digits is divisible by 9.
Review Divisibility rules on 4,8,11 and 12

• A number is divisible by 4 if the number formed by

the last two digits in a number is divisible by 4, the
original/ or given number is divisible by 4. Also, a
number ending with two zeros is always divisible by 4.

• A number is divisible by 8 if the number formed by

the last 3 digits is divisible by 8. Also, a number ending
in three zeroes is divisible by 8.
Review Divisibility rules on 4,8,11 and 12

• A number is divisible by 11 if the sum of the digits in

the odd places and the sum of the digits in the even
places are equal or their difference is a multiple of 11.

• A number is divisible by 12 if it is divisible by both 3

and 4

1.What do we mean by factors ?

2.What are multiples?
3.How do we solve problems using
factors, multiples and divisibility?
4.What do we need to solve a
problem?
Problem no.1:
Let’s do this!

Delfin is willing to give a reward to

whoever guesses his age this year. His
clues states that his age is divisible by
12 and is a multiple of 9, and that he is
less than 51 years old. How old is
Delfin?
Steps in solving 1. Understand:
problem:

What is asked in the problem?

∙ The age of Delfin this year
What are the given facts?
∙ Age is divisible by 12
∙ Age is multiple of 9
*Age is less than 51
Steps in solving 2. Plan:
problem:

What strategy is used to solve the

problem?
Since there are just a few numbers
less than 51 which are divisible by 12
and multiples 9, we will use Listing
Method and Elimination.
Steps in solving 3. Solve:
problem:

Listing Method
.Numbers divisible by 12 and
multiples of 9 that is less than 51

Factors of 12- 24,36,48

multiples of 9- 9,18,27,36,45
Steps in solving 3. Solve:
problem:
Eliminate numbers which is not
.
common to12 and 9
xx x
12- 12,24,36,48
xx x x
9- 9,18,27,36,45
Steps in solving 3. Solve:
problem:

36 –. is the number less than 51

which is divisible by 12 and
multiples of 9.
Therefore, the age of Delfin this
year is 36.
x Steps in solving 4. Check:
problem:

We .check if the answer satisfies the clues

given by Delfin.
∙ 36 is divisible by12
∙ 36 is multiple of 9
∙ 36 is less than 51
Since the clues given by Delfin are met, then
we conclude that the answer is correct.
Problem no.2:
Let’s do this!

Mr. Joe needs to have a blocks of wood

that are 6 inches long each. He found
log of wood in their backyard that have
the following lengths in inches: 44,54
and 63. Which of these three logs is his
best option to get equally-sized block of
woods without any excess.
x Steps in solving 1.Understand:
problem:

What
. is asked in the problem?
∙ Best option to get equally-sized
block without any excess
What are the given facts?
∙ Blocks of wood with the
following lengths: 44, 54 and 63
∙ 6 inches long
x Steps in solving 2. Plan:
problem:

.
What strategy is used to solve the
problem?
Which of the three logs is divisible by
6 with exact answer.
x Steps in solving 3. Solve:
problem:

.
Is 44 divisible by 6? NO
Is 54 divisible by 6? YES
Is 63 divisible by 6? NO
Since 54 is divisible by 6 , so
Mr.Joe will choose the log measures
54 inches
x Steps in solving 4. Check:
problem:

.
54÷ 6 = 9

Mr. Joe needs 9 logs with equal

lengths of 6 inches
