HEARING is an accident brain response to
the sound that requires no effort.

LISTENING is purposeful and focused


rather than accidental.

Listening According to
Nunan, (2001:23)

1.) Hearing
It is the perception of sound, not necessarily
paying attention.

2.) Attention
It refers to a selection that our brain focuses
on.

3.) Understanding
It consists of analyzing the meaning of what
we have heard.

4.) Remembering
It is a process where an individual adds to his
mind’s storage bank what he has listened to.

5.) Selecting
This is the part where we choose what to
listen to which will be ignored.

6.) Evaluating
It is when the active listeners weigh evidence, sort facts
from opinions, and determine the presence or absence of
prejudice in a message.

7.) Responding
It requires the receiver to complete the
process through verbal and non-verbal
feedback.
