INTRODUCTION

• Dimming glass, known by its full name as electronically controlled dimming glass,
is a kind of glass that uses power to regulate the line of sight of light.
• Electronically controlled dimming glass is a high-tech liquid crystal film installed
between two layers of glass, high temperature, and high-pressure processing into the
laminated glass.
• With the “power transparent, power off atomization” role! When the power is turned
off, the liquid crystal molecules in the glass are irregularly dispersed, so the light
can not pass through, the glass is milky white, when powered on, the liquid crystal
molecules are arranged neatly, the light can be shot in, the glass is transparent.

STRUCTURE
• The liquid crystal film into the middle of the two layers of glass by high temperature
and high-pressure glue, the formation of a new type of special photoelectric glass
products, wherein the liquid crystal film has a state of fog (opaque) in the state of
power loss when power is transparent.
• The dimming glass has the characteristics of ordinary glass and electronic curtains.

PRODUCT PERFORMANCE
DIRTY HABIT RESTAURANT (USA)
CASE STUDYDIRTY
- HABIT RESTAURANT (USA)

• The project team was pleased to discover that electronically

controlled dimming glass resolved every design challenge it faced.
• Covering 2,042 square feet across the entire restaurant facade and a
skylight, dimming glass automatically darkens or clears in response
to sun movement throughout the day.
• Glare and solar heat gain are controlled inside the restaurant at all
times to keep diners comfortable and the view unobstructed,
complying with the requirements set forth by the historical
preservation committee.
• The resulting reductions in cooling requirements also allowed a more
compact and lightweight HVAC system to be installed on the roof.
• The visually arresting, all-glass façade complements the surrounding Evening view ( dimming glass)
classical revival architecture, upholding the edgy aesthetic that Hotel
Monaco set out to create.
• When the dimming glass is clear, the view from the surrounding
patio into the front of the Dirty Habit reveals an exciting interior
design. On hot, sunny days, the dimming glass is darkened to keep
diners comfortable inside.
• This view of the rear of the Dirty Habit shows the reflected building
across the patio.

SWISS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF DUBAI
CASE STUDYSWISS
- INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF DUBA

• SISD is an eco-friendly campus, meeting the sustainable standards and

reflects a comfortable and healthy interior climate with highest standards of
energy consumption.

Concept Of The Project -

• According to the client’s demands SISD energy concept was determined in brief:
envelope optimization depending on day lighting and load minimization, HVAC by
zone, building simulation and MINERGIE target.

• Thus, the design team of SORANE SA who took developing an energy concept for
SISD project, also considered efficient protection from the sun, cooling demand
reduction (optimization of the glazed surface), tight envelope, reducing outside air
the strict minimum, using high efficient ventilation systems, controlling the
ventilation schedules (only during occupations), avoiding the use of air cooling
systems and increasing chilled water temperature (higher EER) within the energy
strategy of the SISD campus project.
CASE STUDY - 2

Day Lighting Level

• During the initial design of the building envelope the design team wanted to use EC
glazing panels in all four orientations of the façade openings as the base case
scenario.

• However, direct solar radiation duration (in hours) was found to be too long in Dubai
with an increasing effect on cooling loads (Table 1).

• The daylight factor was above 1,5% and the 95% autonomy was ensured in most
school classes. In order to ensure daylight and reduce cooling load, it was decided to
use EC glazing in the office building in its North and West Façades of the secondary
school (Figure 1b). 110 square meters of electronically tintable glass was installed in
both façade with a Window-to-Wall Ratio (WWR) of 85%.

• Dynamic glass controls sunlight in order to optimize daylight and maintain outdoor
views while simultaneously enhance occupant comfort by preventing glare and solar
heat.
