INTRODUCTION ABOUT FLY WHEEL ENERGY
STORAGE SYSTEM

•  flywheel is a mechanical device which uses the conservation of angular

momentum to store rotational energy

• In a flywheel, electricity is stored as mechanical energy by simply spinning a rotor

COMPONENTS

* A flywheel has several critical components.

• Rotor – a spinning mass that stores energy in the form of momentum
• Bearings– pivots on which the rotor rests
• Motor-Generator – a device that converts stored mechanical energy into
electrical energy, or electrical energy into mechanical energy
• Etc..,
CONSTRUCTION OF FLYWHEEL ENERGY
STORAGE SYSTEM
• It also act as apart of clutch mechanism and fluid drive unit.

• Flywheel is the circular wheel made up of steel or cast iron, depends upon the application

• It has teeth on outer edge which is meshed with the teeth of electric cranking motor driven pinion
and it is used to crank (to rotate crank shaft) the engine during its starting
FLY WHEEL ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEM
USED BY NASA
Advantages

•Power and energy are nearly independent

•Fast power response
•Potentially high specific energy
•High cycle and calendar life
•Relatively high round-trip efficiency
•Short recharge time
DISADVANTAGES

•Complexity of durable and low loss bearings

•Mechanical stress and fatigue limits
•Material limits at around 700M/sec tip speed
•Potentially hazardous failure modes
•Relatively high parasitic and intrinsic losses
•Short discharge times
STATUS OF THE TECHNOLOGY

• Flywheels are being marketed as environmentally safe, reliable, modular, and high-
lifecycle.
• And also used as alternatives to lead-acid batteries for uninterruptible power supplies
(UPSs) and other power-conditioning equipment designed to improve the quality of power
delivered to critical or protected loads.
CONCLUSION

• Flywheels are the most promising technologies for replacing conventional

lead acid batteries
• Advantages in materials and bearing technology has made it possible to
mitigate inherent disadvantages
• Flywheels have a wide variety of uses in commercial and industrial sectors
