What are benefits?
The U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics defines
 benefits as “non-wage compensation provided to employees,”
and groups benefits into five categories:
 paid leave
 supplementary pay (premium pay for overtime and work on
holidays and weekends, shift differentials, nonproduction
bonuses)
 retirement (defined benefit and defined contribution plans);
 insurance
 legally required benefits (Social Security and Medicare, Federal
and State unemployment insurance taxes, and workers’
compensation).
What are perks?
Cambridge Dictionary defines perk as
“an advantage or something extra, such
as money or goods, that you are given
because of your job.”
E.g. paid gym memberships, free in-
office lunches, etc
In simple words….. 
Benefits are items that employees truly need, items that
employees would have to pay out-of-pocket for if it were not
for assistance from their employer. 

Perks fall more into the category of wants. These are


items that employees love and value in the workplace, but that
they could technically do without.

The employer pays for the worker’s salary if the
worker becomes disabled or is unable to work. An

Organizations offering employees to pay back for
their education expenses is an excellent employee
benefits idea. Employees have to pay on their own
before taking up a course. But once the system

Refers to the discounts offered to employees on


the original price of goods or services by the
employer. These are discounts that are developed

also use this method to test their products

These are benefits where an employee is paid even
when he takes time off from work. An extension of
this benefit is providing unlimited vacation. Many
companies providing this benefit have seen it be
